25 Under 25 Honorees Promote UNITY at California Native American Day
Two of UNITY’s 25 Under 25 Honorees, Dahkota Brown (left in photo) & Nataanii Hatathlie, participated in the 47th Annual California Native American Day at the State Capital in Sacramento on Friday, September 26th.
Brown and Hatathlie were recognized along with 23 other Native youth leaders from across the country this past July at UNITY’s National Conference in Portland, Oregon. While at California’s Native American Day, they met with tribal dignitaries and Native youth in attendance from across the state, promoting the UNITY message and encouraging youth to get involved.
“We had a great response, with many interested in becoming involved with UNITY, while others expressing their support for Native youth as UNITY affiliates” said Hatathlie.
The Native American Day addressed the theme “Water is Sacred” with speakers, performers, and veterans including Lynn Valbuena, Chairwoman of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, the Tule River Color Guard, and the Shingle Springs Rancheria Miwok Dance Group among others. The event is hosted annually on the fourth Friday of September by California’s State Tribal Liaisons.
