This fall, Alina Sanchez (Miwok – Wilton Rancheria), Pacific Regional Representative on the National UNITY Council Executive Committee, showcased her dynamic leadership through advocacy, cultural awareness, and community engagement. From hosting regional gatherings to performing land acknowledgments and leading school spirit initiatives, Alina proved that powerful leadership can come from both cultural pride and everyday connection.

Alina co-hosted the Fall Regional Gathering alongside Northwest Regional Representative Tia Butler. Held virtually via Zoom, this UNITY event brought together Native youth from across the Pacific and Northwest regions to discuss issues impacting their communities. “I had a nice time connecting with others and sharing issues we’re passionate about creating change in,” Alina shared. “The event was very lovely, and a chance to meet others. We engaged, discussed, and connected.” The gathering reflected UNITY’s mission to give Native youth a platform to collaborate, exchange ideas, and inspire advocacy for regional change.

Alina also participated in the 2025 Breaking Barriers Conference, where she led a land acknowledgment that set a powerful tone for the event. Accompanied by her sister and dear friend, she shared both a tribal acknowledgment and a women’s empowerment song, honoring the Indigenous peoples whose lands continue to sustain the conference’s participants. “I love the fact that the land is actively acknowledged,” Alina said. “It’s so empowering to complete one because it brings awareness to the Native American cultures that shape our communities and live on our land.” Her performance reminded attendees of the ongoing responsibility to honor and recognize Native nations, past and present.

Alina joined the Youth Forward Group and Native Sisters Circle Organization for a powerful evaluation and discussion session centered on Native perspectives and youth advocacy. Together, participants shared stories and insights on how to strengthen support and funding for Native-led programs. “The voices of Native American perspectives must be heard and recognized,” she reflected. “When we speak on the issues faced in our communities, we expect a difference to be made.” The gathering embodied the spirit of UNITY—bringing youth together to envision a stronger, more equitable future.
Alina brought her passion for connection back to her school, helping to organize and host Fall & Spooky Spirit Week through her Student Government. The week was filled with fun and engagement — themed dress-up days, rallies, a quarter war competition, and spooky gram sales. “I had an AMAZING time hosting this spirit week,” Alina said. “It demonstrates the amount of spirit active on my campus. It’s always rewarding to see the amount of fun that is had during these weeks!”

Through her dedication to community, culture, and collaboration, Alina continues to exemplify what it means to lead with heart. Whether she’s engaging Native youth in dialogue, honoring Indigenous lands through song, or sparking school pride, she brings people together in the spirit of UNITY’s mission — to empower Native youth through leadership grounded in tradition and connection.
As the Pacific Regional Representative on the National UNITY Council Executive Committee, Alina stands as a beacon for Native youth across the region, inspiring them to lead with authenticity, advocate for change, and celebrate their cultures with pride.
