Audition Call at National UNITY Conference
Audition Call: No Previous Acting Experience Required!
Attention Native Youth:
Do you have any experience doing plays or theater in your school? Have you ever thought of auditioning for a play? During the upcoming UNITY Conference in Washington DC, you will have the opportunity to audition for My Father’s Bones, a short play by award winning playwrights Suzan Shown Harjo (Cheyenne and Hodulgee Muscogee) and Mary Kathryn Nagle (Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma). My Father’s Bones recounts the struggle of Jack, Bill and Richard Thorpe to recover the remains of their father — the unmatched Olympian Jim Thorpe — so that he can buried with their relatives in Sac and Fox Nation land. You can read about and watch a reading of the play HERE. You can follow the campaign on Facebook and Twitter at #BringJimThorpeHome.
My Father’s Bones will be presented to the entire General Assembly on Sunday July 12, at 1:30pm. And, we are looking to cast the play with you — the Youth in attendance at the conference!! If you are interested in auditioning, auditions will be held at 1:30 pm on Saturday, July 11. If you are cast in the play, you will need to commit to attending rehearsal from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Saturday, as well as a lunch meeting with Dr. Harjo and Ms. Nagle on Sunday, July 12, before the 1:30 pm reading.
This is an incredible opportunity to share your own creative talent with your colleagues and find your voice on stage. *No previous acting experience is required* — in fact, we encourage anyone who has an interest in theater, even if you have not yet worked in the theater, to audition! This is also an opportunity to work closely with two award winning playwrights. Dr. Harjo is a recipient of the 2014 Presidential Medal of Freedom, and Ms. Nagle is an alum of the Public Theater’s Emerging Writers Group. Both have incredible experience writing and performing plays in New York, Washington, D.C., and across Indian Country.
If you are interested in auditioning, please SIGN UP HERE to reserve a spot at auditions on July 11. Auditions will be held from 1:30pm to 2:30pm. Please email if you are interested so we can ensure we have enough time to hear everyone.
Thank you – and we look forward to seeing you soon!
