Yavapai Apache Nation re-organizes youth council

The Yavapai Apache Nation (YAN), located in central Arizona, is looking forward to getting its youth council up and running.  Leona Wathagoma, who has been involved with the tribal youth council for many years, is taking the lead once again to serve as its lead advisor. Wathagoma and other adults met recently with UNITY staff members to discuss reorganization and collaboration efforts. Read More

UNITY Co-Presidents participate in Arizona tribal parade

The National UNITY Council (NUC) Co-Presidents Joseph Davis, of the Gila River Indian Community (Akimel O’odham), and Susun Fisher, Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, recently participated in the 93rd Annual White Mountain Apache Tribe’s parade held earlier this month in Arizona during its annual celebration featuring rodeos, carnival, cultural night performance, basketball and softball tournaments and more.  Davis, and Fisher, who were also joined by NUC Western Representative Anissa Garcia, Akimel O’odham, walked through the parade with members of the White Mountain Apache Tribal Youth Council.

Apsaalooke Nation celebrates the Centennial Crow Fair


BAAXAWUAASHE (Crow Agency, MT) – Crow Fair is the annual celebration of the Apsaalooke (Crow) people. This year was very significant because it was the Centennial celebration. Crow Fair is the largest Native American event in Montana. It is one of the most unique events in Indian Country consisting of a powwow, rodeo, Indian relay, parades, a 5K run, and many other events. Did you know? New York Yankee served as UNITY Trustee


The late Allie Reynolds, a Muscogee Creek, was known as one of the finest pitchers in the Major Leagues. He gained national prominence as a pitcher for the New York Yankees during their 1950s dynasty. Prior to that he played for the Cleveland Indians. In 1951, he received the Ray Hickok Award, which honored the top professional athlete of the year. He played with and against the likes of baseball legends Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, Ted Williams, Jackie Robinson, Joe Garagiola, Sr. and Mickey Mantle. Read More

Sky Wildcat Chosen for Cherokee Environmental Leadership Program

Sky Wildcat, recent UNITY’s 25 Under 25 Awardee, was one of four chosen to participate in a three year program incorporating Cherokee (ᏣᎳᎩ ᎦᏬᏂᎯᏍᏗ, Tsalagi Gawonihisdi) language revitalization and cultural environmental stewardship. Wildcat explains how earlier this month she “began the Cherokee Environmental Leadership Program where we will focus on learning the Cherokee language, identifying medicinal plants, their uses, and English/Latin/Cherokee names.”

Challenge Accepted: Youth Council of the Year SRPMIC Wellness Warriors

UNITY’s 2018 Youth Council of the Year leads by example hosting a variety of wellness events within their community. Young River Peoples Council of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, Arizona, was recognized as Youth Council of the Year last month at the National UNITY Conference in San Diego. The UNITY Wellness Warriors Program challenges affiliated youth councils to implement a Wellness Warrior event this year. By utilizing the project planning tools offered through the free mobile phone app and on the UNITY website, youth councils can join the national movement and share traditional wellness teachings with their home community. The Wellness Warriors program promotes Physical, Mental, Spiritual and Social Wellness. Congrats to the SRPMIC’s youth for promoting wellness in each of these areas!

25 Under 25 At 2018 ILEAD Youth Summit


UNITY 25 Under 25 Awardees took the annual ILEAD Youth Summit 2018 by storm! The event, recently held at the University of Montana, in Missoula, Montana, was sponsored by the U.S. Administration for Native Americans’ (ANA) new Native Youth Initiatives for Leadership, Empowerment, and Development (ILEAD), the Summit drew more than 100 Native youths from 13 tribal and island nations.” Read More
