Spirit of the Sun, Inc., who’s mission is to work in partnership with Native American communities in urban areas and on reservations to boost the resilience of Native people, especially youth and young adults, has been awarded a $30,000 grant by the Rose Foundation’s Innovate for Good program. Titled Empowering Native Youth in Metro Denver, the grant will be used for a leadership conference, and to partner and with UNITY for the planning of the 2017 National UNITY Conference to be held at the Denver Convention Center in Denver, Colorado, from July 6 – 10, 2017.

“What a thrill to have a grant from the Rose Community Foundation to support the empowerment of Native youth across metro Denver to plan and conduct a youth leadership conference for early 2017, which will provide youth with motivation and skills to engage with UNITY to plan and conduct the 2017 national conference in Denver,” said Lucille Echohawk, team lead for the grant proposal, and an Americorps VISTA with Spirit of the Sun, Inc.

One of the goals that the grant will help to realize is engaging the more than 50,000 Native people, who represent 100+ tribes, living in the Denver area, to come together as a community and be active participants in not only both conferences but to support and promote Native youth leadership development. The organization was one of six organizations/groups recognized and awarded the prestigious grant.
