In observance of Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, UNITY is sharing Healthy Native Youth’s resources that will help you promote healthy relationships and deliver sexual health programming to youth in your community, virtually and in-person.

Healthy Native Youth Spotlight

Curriculum: I Know Mine
The Safe in the Village program is designed to start conversations about healthy relationships with Alaska Native youth. The movie depicts Matt, Sarah, and Ben, three friends in rural Alaska navigating life, dealing with peer pressure around relationships, sex, friendships and alcohol. A free facilitator’s guide covers planning, hosting, discussion tips and more. Click here to watch the video.

Lesson Enhancement: Two Spirit, LGBTQ and Sexual Identity
In response to requests from Native youth, Western States Center partnered with the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians, the Center for Native American Youth, and Native Youth Leadership Alliance to develop a resource toolkit. This toolkit is written to support Native youth, tribal communities, Two-Spirit and Native LGBTQIA+ collectives, community leaders, and partners who intend to better understand and support our Two-Spirit and LGBTQIA+ communities. Resources for Parents and Caring Adults: Talking is Power!
Join Talking is Power, a weekly text messaging series for parents and caring adults. We know talking to teens about sensitive topics is never easy, but it’s important to talk to them openly and honestly. Text the word “EMPOWER” to 97779 and you’ll receive culturally appropriate tips and resources, covering sexual health, pregnancy, STDs, and consent!
  • Text “EMPOWER” to 97779

Community of Practice: Connecting our Past to our Present Re-traumatization
On February 10th, join our friends from the Intertribal Council of Arizona, Inc. to discuss their Indigenous Approach Framework to get a sense of where Indigenous folks are coming from, so that we can then move forward with the process of decolonization, using cultural resiliency to journey together towards the wonderful land of cultural competency! Together we can!
Add the event to your calendar and stay tuned for others. On February 17th we will host a special session on the Healthy Native Youth Website & Virtual Adaptation Guide.

COVID-19 cases and deaths rates are higher than ever, what happens next depends on how we continue to protect ourselves and our communities. Vaccines will help, but we must continue to keep up your guard until the end:
  • Get vaccinated when it becomes available to you.
  • Wear a mask
  • Practice social distancing
  • Ensure good ventilation indoors.
  • Let’s manage this pandemic together!

CARING Text Messages
We all can get down and feel like no one understands what we’re going through. One of the great things about being Native, is that we are all connected and can have each other’s back. The Caring Text Messaging Campaign is comprised of messages from people who care and they can help youth during hard times.
Text “CARING’’ to 65664 to receive regular reminders about how awesome you are from people who care!
