TNL Boston Provides Leadership Training for more than 60 Youth

The last in the series of UNITYs Today’s Native Leaders training sessions took place on Friday through Sunday, April 7 – 9, in Danvers, Massachusetts, approximately 25 miles north of Boston.

More than 60 youth from the Northeast region of the country and a group from Wisconsin gathered for an inspiring weekend of work dedicated to the betterment of their communities.

Long time UNITY trainer and facilitator Pearl Yellowman served as the Adult facilitator for this session and UNITY Wellness Warrior staff LorenAshley Buford and Joshua Tso joined as team facilitators.

The group met on Friday afternoon and spent time doing icebreakers and teambuilding after formal introductions were made. Group norms were established and each youth team moved forward with their mind mapping exercises where they identified community challenges and selected the challenge they were going to address in their service projects.

Saturday was a long day and the entire group remained focused and worked hard on their planning for their projects. Conference participants enjoyed seafood in Boston for dinner.

On Sunday morning, each group conducted formal presentations where they described the objective of their projects, how and when they were going to implement their projects, and shared aspects of their projects they felt nervous about as well as aspects they were excited about.

Youth Councils in attendance included the Mohegan Tribe and Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation from Connecticut, the Penobscot Nation from Maine, the Aquinnah Wampanoag and Mashpee Wampanoag Tribes of Massachusetts, Shinnecock Nation from New York, Forest County Potawatomi from Wisconsin, as well as individuals from the Rappahannock Narrangansett, Nipmuc, and Rappahannock Tribes.
