UNITY Alumni Spotlight: Q&A with Sheldon Smith
Meet UNITY Alumni, Sheldon Smith, Navajo from Albuquerque New Mexico. He served as male member at large on the National UNITY Executive Committee. In the early 2000’s, Sheldon shared that his family witnessed good things from National UNITY conference, so every summer, they family made a commitment to attend the national conferences.
Q: You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why?
A: Black because nothing can go wrong with black.
Q: What was the last gift you gave someone?
A: Last thing, was for my niece. I got her a Barbie Skipper Babysitter stroller play set for her birthday.
Q: Where do you work and what do you do?
A: At the moment, I am self-employed, working on developing a project called T.S.M.RISE that allows me to provide consulting services.
Q: Tell me something about your work, that inspires you to keep moving forward?
A: Leaving a mark on youth especially to aspire them to seek positive change.
Q: If you could be any animal in the world, what animal would you be and why?
A: I always thought it would be amazing to be a walrus because of their giant tusks.
Q: Pretend you’re an age between 14 and 24. What three concerns for Native youth keeping you up at night?
A: Culture, Health and Self-Awareness.
Q: What inspires you?
A: Family and Culture
Q: Think about the greatest challenge you’ve faced. What is the best advice you received?
A: My greatest challenge was changing careers, which was climbing cell towers and best advice “Never back down.”
Q: What are you known for?
A: Being a UNITY Fire Keeper and a Native artist specializing in bead work.
Q: What do you work toward in your free time?
A: I enjoy beading, and being active.
Q: What’s something that will always be in fashion, no matter how much time passes?
A: Turquoise Jewelry
Q: Who gives you the best support, when you’re having a bad day?
A: I would say, my significant other.
Q: What is your best memory about a UNITY conference?
A: Meeting peers from all over the country.
