Madeline Lamb, Mohave/Muscogee Creek, and Jay Massey-Heyl, White Mountain Apache, have been selected to serve as co-anchors for the UNITY News segments set to be shown during the 2019 National UNITY Conference in Orlando, Florida. Lamb and Massey-Heyl taped the first segment of UNITY News last week at the ABC 15 news studio in Phoenix, Arizona. A total of five segments will be shown at the national conference featuring stories produced by news crews made up of Native youth taking part in the pre-conference UNITY Communications Bootcamp. The training is sponsored by Arizona State University’s Cronkite School of Journalism.
“It such a blast filming at the ABC15 Phoenix studios for UNITY News! The UNITY organization has given me so many opportunities and I am forever thankful. A big Mvto to Mary Kim Titla for always being supportive and helping me and other Native youth achieve their goals. You just might see me as a news anchor in the future! See you all at UNITY 2019 in Orlando, Florida!,” said Lamb.
“I had a great time co-hosting with Maddie Lamb. I learned on the spot how crucial it is to not miss a single detail as we taped the first UNITY newscast. UNITY staff and the ABC 15 news crew were very supportive, which was helpful. Plus it was nice having Mary Kim Titla, a former newscaster, as our director!,” said Massey-Heyl.
There’s still time to sign up for the Communications Bootcamp scheduled for Wednesday, July 3 and Thursday, July 4 in Orlando. Multi-media mentors will work with teams of Native youth who will film, write and produce news stories. Sign up today!
