UNITY Presents TNL Workshop at NIEA Convention

unity-2016-niea-booth-photoThe National Indian Education Association (NIEA) held their 47th Annual Convention and Trade Show October 5-8, 2016 in Reno, Nevada. The four-day convention included over 100 workshops, research presentations, poster sessions, keynote addresses, cultural sharing, and exhibitors from across the country. The 2016 NIEA Convention theme: “Building Education Nations by Engaging Families, Educators, and Leaders” brought together educators, students, and advocates to share teaching strategies and to seek solutions for challenges faced by Native students.

UNITY participated as both an exhibitor and a workshop presenter. The UNITY booth was visited by hundreds of convention attendees seeking leadership development information and opportunities for Native students. Visitors also included a large number of UNITY youth, alumni, and advisors who shared their excitement for upcoming events such as the UNITY Midyear Conference in February 2017 and the National UNITY Conference in July 2017.

In support of the NIEA theme, Lynnann Yazzie, Project Coordinator for UNITY’s Today’s Native Leaders (TNL) youth leadership initiative presented a workshop titled, “Taking Action as Today’s Native Leaders.” Workshop participants were engaged in the TNL Action Planning Process through team-building exercises and hands-on activities. Educators and Native youth advocates were presented with examples of how youth are using this process to step up and take action to create positive change in their communities by planning, designing, and implementing service projects. At the conclusion of the workshop, each participant was challenged to find ways to support greater youth involvement and thereby helping to create more youth leaders.
