UNITY “Rapid Fire” with American Indian Chamber

In August, UNITY youth participated in the American Indian Chamber of Commerce of Arizona’s Networking Luncheon at the Lehi Branch of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Scottsdale.  UNITY Executive Director, Mary Kim Titla, was accompanied by local UNITY youth Zanetta Cayou, Jay Massey-Heyl, and Audri Mitchell as guest presenters during the “Rapid Fire” Presentations. The youth shared how their involvement with UNITY has helped develop their skills in the areas of public speaking, networking, project planning and career development.

Additional Rapid Fire from other organizations included Patti Hibbeler, Phoenix Indian Center and Dede Devine, Native American Connections, sharing ways native youth can get involved during the upcoming Native American Recognition Days and Phoenix Indian School Park renovations.

The theme of the luncheon was “Doing Business with Boys and Girls Clubs” and featured various presenters including  Kyla Silas (Hopi) “2017 Youth of the Year”. Kyla gave a powerful testimonial how getting involved with her local Boys & Girls Club helped her overcome many of the same challenges that Native youth across the nation face today. There was also a special performance by the Lehi Hoop Dancers from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale, led by UNITY Alumni Kevin Duncan. Kevin explained that because Hoop Dance had opened so many opportunities for himself, that he now teaches other native youth in hopes of empowering them to achieve their dreams and continue to be a strong representation of their home community.  UNITY is grateful for the many community partnerships and organizations associated with the American Indian Chamber who continue to help support native youth through collaborations.
