UNITY Youth Leader Named “High School Student of the Year”
Co-President of UNITY’s Cesar Chavez Native American Youth Council, Izaiah Lopez (Tohono O’odham), has been named the male High School Student of the Year by the Arizona American Indian Excellence in Leadership Awards.
Izaiah is being recognized for his leadership with his youth council, serving as the co-president for the past three years, and as a national UNITY representative for two years. In addition, he is involved with the Future Inspired Native American Leaders (FINAL) College and Career Readiness Program and has hundreds of hours in volunteer time with organizations and groups including the Gila River Indian Community, GONA, Waila Festival, UNITY, mentoring for student in danger of failing, Five Tribes Celebration, Iwo Jima Celebration, and Phoenix Union High School Native American Education Program.
Now in its thirty-third year, the Leadership Awards recognizes excellence of work, innovation in approach, impact within the community or across the nation. A committee of past leadership recipients choose the 2015 honorees.
