YOUTH LEADERS TO ADDRESS VIOLENCE AND PHYSICAL ASSAULT IN INDIAN COUNTRY
“Our Sisters’ Voice Campaign” focuses on Violence and Physical Assault against women in Indian country
In April at the National UNITY Council Executive Committee retreat, hosted by the Ak-Chin Indian Community, youth leaders created a new resolution to bring awareness to violence and physical assault against women in Indian country, titled “Our Sisters’ Voice Campaign.”
According to research conducted by Futures Without Violence, American Indian women residing on Indian reservations suffer domestic violence and physical assault at rates far exceeding women of other ethnicities. A 2004 Department of Justice report estimates these assault rates to be as much as 50% higher than the next most victimized demographic.
The youth leaders will address this topic and many others at the 2016 National UNITY Conference to be held in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, July 22-26, 2016. Discounted registration is available through May 31.
