“Leading with Purpose: Watson Whitford Champions Culture, Wellness, and Unity”
For Watson Whitford, a proud Chippewa Cree and Navajo youth leader and Co-President of the National UNITY Council Executive Committee, leadership is rooted in community, culture, and self-care. In October, Watson dedicated himself to fostering connections between Indigenous leaders, youth, and non-Indigenous communities while prioritizing his mental health and cultural grounding.
“Indigenous leaders everywhere are the hope for the future,” Watson shared. “This month has been about honoring that hope, educating others, and preparing for the work ahead.”
Grounding in Culture and Wellness
As a student at Montana State University, Watson took a semester break in the spring of 2025 to focus on his mental health and deepen his connection to his culture and language. This choice reflects UNITY’s mission to foster the spiritual, cognitive, physical, and social development of Native youth.
“Taking time to ground myself in my culture and language is essential for my wellness and leadership,” Watson explained. “Strong leaders prioritize their well-being so they can serve their communities effectively.”
Amplifying Voices on Indigenous Peoples Day
Watson participated in an Indigenous Peoples Day event in Bozeman, Montana. Tribal leaders and Indigenous representatives highlighted the struggles Native peoples have faced over the years. The event concluded with a round dance, symbolizing unity and resilience.
“I hope more events like this can happen to educate non-Indigenous peoples about Indigenous issues,” Watson said. “We can create understanding and drive meaningful change through education and dialogue.”
This event emphasized the importance of civic engagement and cultural awareness, values that UNITY instills in its youth leaders as they work to mobilize grassroots efforts and celebrate their identities.
Inspiring Change at the NCAI Convention
In October, Watson also attended the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada, which brought together tribal leaders, youth representatives, and Indigenous advocates. Alongside Co-President Katy Johnston, Watson delivered a powerful call to action to Indigenous leaders, addressing the top 10 issues facing Native youth.
“This experience was inspiring and brought hope for the future of Indigenous peoples,” Watson shared. “It was an honor to strengthen our connection with the NCAI Youth Commission and discuss the challenges and opportunities ahead.”
Watson’s involvement in the convention highlighted how Native youth leaders influence national networks and promote leadership, citizenship, and personal development within their communities.
Strengthening Connections Across Generations
Watson’s work this month reflects the power of intergenerational collaboration in creating a unified vision for the future. By engaging with tribal leaders and youth commissions, he is building bridges that empower Native youth to lead while honoring the wisdom of their elders.
