Fostering Community Engagement Through Cultural Events

Carmella Bear, a proud member of the Penobscot Nation and a UNITY 25 Under 25 honoree, continues to exemplify servant leadership by actively engaging her community in meaningful ways. Through initiatives that blend cultural celebration with civic participation, Carmella demonstrates the power of youth-led efforts in strengthening community bonds.

Elevating Indigenous Voices on the National Stage

As a representative of the Center for Native American Youth and UNITY, Carmella participated in the White House Tribal Youth Forum, a platform that brings together Native youth from across the country to engage with federal officials on pressing issues. Reflecting on her experience, she shared:

“This year’s White House Tribal Youth Forum gave me the opportunity to connect with and learn from Native youth all over Indian country. I have made so many new friendships and I’m so excited for how I’ll continue to grow with their help.”

The forum addressed critical topics such as food sovereignty, climate change, mental health, and missing and murdered Indigenous persons, emphasizing the importance of youth leadership and cultural preservation.

Advocating for Civic Engagement and Representation

Carmella’s commitment to civic engagement was further demonstrated when she spoke at a “Natives for Harris” rally in Bangor, Maine. The event aimed to mobilize Native communities and emphasize the significance of their participation in the democratic process. By sharing her perspectives, Carmella highlighted the vital role of Indigenous voices in shaping the nation’s future.

Celebrating Milestones with Purpose

In addition to her advocacy work, Carmella celebrated her 18th birthday by organizing an annual fundraiser, channeling the occasion into an opportunity to support causes close to her heart. This initiative reflects her dedication to giving back to her community and inspiring others to do the same.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Through her multifaceted efforts—from community events to national forums—Carmella Bear embodies the spirit of servant leadership. Her actions not only uplift her community but also serve as a beacon for other Native youth aspiring to make a difference. By embracing her heritage and leading with purpose, Carmella paves the way for a future where Indigenous voices are heard, valued, and empowered.
