For Jamie Crowe of the Pueblo of Tesuque, January was filled with moments of pride, inspiration, and renewed commitment to Native youth leadership. As a Southwest Executive Committee Member of the National UNITY Council, Jamie began the year by reconnecting with fellow youth leaders and celebrating an important milestone within their family.

From January 16–19, Jamie attended the 2026 UNITY Midyear Conference in Phoenix, Arizona. The gathering brought Native youth leaders from across the country together to collaborate, participate in workshops, and strengthen the UNITY network. Throughout the conference, youth engaged in sessions focused on leadership development, community action planning, and issues impacting Native youth today.

Reflecting on the experience, Jamie shared, “Being able to attend the Midyear conference was something that I am completely grateful for. I feel so fulfilled and empowered.” Being surrounded by young leaders who are passionate about improving their communities served as a powerful reminder of the potential within Native youth.

Jamie continued, “Being able to be surrounded by inspiring Native youth always reminds me that there is hope for the future. If you really take the time to listen to Native youth, it serves as inspiration to continue moving forward in a time of uncertainty.” UNITY gatherings provide a space where youth voices are heard and where ideas for meaningful change begin to take shape.

The conference reinforced Jamie’s belief in the determination and vision of Native youth. “These individuals see the issues that are impacting themselves and their communities, and they have the drive and spark within them to instill change. UNITY provides a place for them to start and uplifts their voices in these areas.”

Beyond the conference, January also brought a special moment of celebration within Jamie’s family. Their father was appointed to the tribal council, marking an important achievement and continuing a tradition of leadership and service within their community.

Jamie reflected on how transformative UNITY gatherings can be, sharing, “I am forever changed every time I attend an event or a conference.” Experiences like the Midyear Conference strengthen connections between Native youth leaders and inspire them to return home ready to serve their communities.

The National UNITY Council (NUC) represents more than 300 affiliated youth councils nationwide and serves as the unified voice of Native youth, including Native Hawaiian and Alaskan Native communities. Through leadership gatherings, trainings, and youth-led initiatives, UNITY equips Native youth with the skills and confidence to address the challenges facing Indian Country.

As a Southwest Regional Representative on the National UNITY Council Executive Committee, Jamie helps elevate the voices of Native youth while collaborating with fellow representatives and Co-Presidents to guide national priorities. Through reflection, inspiration, and continued commitment to leadership, Jamie begins the year energized—ready to continue uplifting Native youth and strengthening the UNITY network.
