This September, Vydell Willie balanced school, personal milestones, and leadership growth while continuing to deepen his role as a UNITY Earth Ambassador. At the 17th Biennial Conference of Science & Management held at Northern Arizona University, Vydell joined students, community members, and environmental leaders to explore the intersection of Indigenous knowledge and modern science. The experience became a powerful moment of reflection and inspiration. “Hearing Robin Wall Kimmerer speak was a grounding moment,” he shared. Surrounded by peers and professionals, Vydell witnessed how Native perspectives are shaping conversations about sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Through events like this, Vydell continues to engage in civic spaces where Indigenous voices matter. Listening to keynote speaker Robin Wall Kimmerer, he connected deeply with teachings centered on reciprocity and respect for the natural world. “Her words on reciprocity and Indigenous knowledge resonated with the conversations I’ve had with past ambassadors,” Vydell said. These moments reinforced the importance of representation—not just attending these spaces, but actively learning, reflecting, and carrying those teachings forward into his community.

Beyond the conference, Vydell remained committed to service through mentorship and relationship-building. Throughout the month, he stayed connected with former Earth Ambassador Jovi Williams, engaging in ongoing conversations about leadership, growth, and community impact. These exchanges reflect a key part of the Earth Ambassador journey—learning from those who came before and building a network of support that strengthens future initiatives. His willingness to seek guidance and stay connected shows that leadership is not a solo path, but a shared one.

Even in personal moments, Vydell found meaning in reflection and gratitude. Celebrating his birthday surrounded by family and friends became another reminder of the relationships that ground his work. These experiences continue to shape his perspective as a young leader committed to balancing personal growth with community responsibility.

Education remains central to Vydell’s journey. As a student at Northern Arizona University, he is actively engaging in spaces where science, culture, and Indigenous knowledge systems intersect. His participation in academic and community-based events reflects a commitment to lifelong learning and applying those lessons to real-world impact. “The experience reminded me that our efforts at NAU and as Earth Ambassadors are part of something larger—uniting culture, science, and community to guide how we care for the future,” he shared.

The UNITY Earth Ambassador Program continues to uplift leaders like Vydell Willie, who are building bridges between tradition and innovation. This year’s cohort represents a powerful network of Native youth who are learning from elders, connecting across generations, and stepping into spaces where their voices matter. Through education, mentorship, and cultural grounding, they are shaping a future guided by reciprocity, respect, and responsibility to the Earth and their communities.
