This November, Vydell Willie continued to grow as a leader by showing up in spaces that blended learning, culture, and community. Through participation in the UNITY Earth Ambassador Webinar and the Western Regional Gathering, Vydell deepened their understanding of environmental stewardship while supporting fellow Native youth. “November reminded me how important it is to keep learning from our culture, our leaders, and our communities,” they reflected.
The month began with continued civic engagement through academic and campus life at Northern Arizona University, where Vydell participated in Homecoming events, connecting with students, alumni, and staff. These gatherings reinforced the importance of community presence, even within academic spaces. At the same time, Vydell collaborated with peers on developing podcast episodes, using research and storytelling as tools to amplify Indigenous perspectives and ideas.
On November 12, Vydell joined fellow ambassadors for a virtual Earth Ambassador Webinar featuring Indigenous leaders sharing teachings on environmental stewardship and traditional ecological knowledge. This experience offered insight into how cultural values guide sustainable practices. “Each moment grounded me in responsibility and connection,” Vydell shared, emphasizing how these teachings continue to shape their leadership journey.
Immediately following the webinar, Vydell attended and supported the Western Regional Earth Ambassador Gathering hosted by the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community from November 13–15. During the gathering, they helped facilitate youth discussions, cultural activities, and project-building workshops, creating space for collaboration and growth among Native youth leaders. A highlight of the gathering included a wetlands visit, where participants connected directly with the land and explored the importance of water systems and environmental protection.
Beyond regional and national spaces, Vydell remained deeply connected to their home community. On November 21 and 26, they attended community bingos, spending meaningful time with families and elders—moments that reflect the importance of intergenerational connection. On November 24, they joined the Round Rock Community Turkey Dinner, where community members gathered to share food, support one another, and celebrate together during the holiday season. These acts of presence and participation demonstrate that leadership is just as much about being there for your people as it is about leading initiatives.
Throughout the month, Vydell’s journey reflected a balance of learning, service, and cultural grounding. “These experiences strengthened my understanding of leadership—showing up, giving back, and carrying our teachings forward,” they shared. Whether in webinars, gatherings, classrooms, or community events, Vydell continues to lead with intention and humility.
The UNITY Earth Ambassador Program uplifts leaders like Vydell Willie who are committed to learning from their communities while giving back in meaningful ways. This year’s cohort represents a network of Indigenous youth who are grounded in tradition and driven by purpose. Through cultural teachings, environmental advocacy, and community engagement, they are carrying forward the responsibility to protect the land and uplift their people for generations to come.
