From Powwow Grounds to Community Action: Liliana Mars Answers the Call

When challenges arise in Native communities, leaders step forward—and this fall, Liliana Mars (Narragansett, Navajo), Executive Committee Member for the Northeast, did exactly that. Balancing cultural connection, regional leadership, and urgent community response, Liliana’s work reflected the heart of servant leadership rooted in responsibility, compassion, and action.

Liliana began the season by attending the Chumash Powwow on the Santa Ynez Reservation in California, hosted by the Santa Ynez Band of Mission Indians. The gathering was a powerful space for cultural connection, honoring song, dance, and the resilience of Indigenous communities. Alongside this, Liliana participated in two regional meetups hosted by members of the National UNITY Council Executive Committee, continuing to strengthen communication and collaboration among Native youth leaders across regions.

Midway through the month, an unexpected crisis shifted priorities. When the SNAP/EBT benefits shutdown was announced, Native families in Liliana’s community were immediately impacted. Rather than waiting, Liliana, her family, and her tribal council moved into action—organizing food sourcing efforts across Rhode Island and neighboring areas to support families in need.

“When it was announced the SNAP/EBT benefits would be halted, we jumped into action and started planning the very next day,” Liliana shared. “It was scary seeing how many members of our community were harmed, but knowing we’re working toward monthly food distributions brings a sense of ease.”

In just one week, the team sourced and prepared supplies for over 220 food boxes, ensuring families had access to essential groceries during an uncertain time. Any remaining food was donated to a local food pantry, extending care beyond their own community and reinforcing a value of collective responsibility.

This blend of cultural presence, regional engagement, and direct service reflects the broader mission of the National UNITY Council (NUC)—to uplift Native youth, inspire hope, and respond to the real issues facing Indian Country. Liliana’s leadership embodies UNITY’s commitment to action, advocacy, and community-driven solutions.

As a Northeast Regional leader on the National UNITY Council Executive Committee, Liliana plays a vital role in representing Native youth voices, strengthening regional connections, and ensuring that youth leadership is present not only in meetings—but in moments when communities need support the most. Through culture, collaboration, and compassion, Liliana continues to help build a stronger, more connected future for Native youth.
