In August and September, Jalen Harvey, the Secretary and Western Region Representative for UNITY, embarked on a transformative journey filled with new opportunities and experiences that shaped her personal and professional growth.

As August commenced, Harvey concluded a pivotal summer internship with UNITY. She expressed her gratitude, stating, ” This internship has been filled with many opportunities, and I can’t thank UNITY enough for being able to learn from the amazing staff and embark on many meaningful conversations.” Her enthusiasm for the connections she made during this time was palpable. “Everyone I had the chance to meet and learn from inspires me every day,” she added, highlighting the profound impact the experience had on her.

Upon returning to Tucson to begin her sophomore year of college, Harvey also stepped into a new role as Director of Business and Administration with the Residence Hall Association. Elected in April, she noted, “I’m super excited about what this position will hold this academic year.” At a recent conference for HI Team students, she began with a land acknowledgment, sharing the rich history of the University of Arizona’s location.

On August 23, Harvey participated in a webinar hosted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration for Indigenous youth. She emphasized the importance of addressing ongoing issues faced by Indigenous communities, stating, “I’m truly grateful to the Youth Roots organization for providing this safe and unique space to voice the realities youth are facing.”

A significant highlight of August was being selected as a One Young World Delegate for the United States through the Deep Connections Fellowship. “This opportunity wouldn’t have been possible without the support of my family, friends, community, UNITY staff, and all the youth within the Western Region,” she reflected. Although she was unable to attend the Summit, she remained thankful for the chance to expand her horizons.

As September unfolded, Harvey’s schedule became even more vibrant. She traveled to Chicago, Illinois, to join the Native Organizers Alliance Fellowship from September 5 to 8. “The weekend consisted of vital and valuable information for voting,” she noted, underscoring the significance of the event in the lead-up to the General Election. Harvey expressed her excitement about representing UNITY, saying, “I had to bring y’all with me and showcase the flag any chance I got.”

Following this, she participated in the Taiwanese American Youth Online Conference, where she shared her experiences as an Urban Indigenous youth. “It was a time to share each other’s culture, and I look forward to possible future collaborations with this amazing group of young leaders!” she remarked.

On September 10, Harvey contributed to a UNITY Suicide Prevention Webinar in collaboration with WeRNative, describing it as “a very powerful webinar filled with strong information and conversations.” Her commitment to addressing pressing issues within her community was evident throughout this busy month.

Returning to her roots, Harvey attended a social dance back in Hopi Tutskwa on September 14 and 15, where she felt rejuvenated among family and friends. “It was a weekend full of good food, sore legs from dancing, laughter, and good medicine,” she shared, expressing her joy at reconnecting with her cultural heritage.

Later in September, she traveled to Shiprock, New Mexico, for a UNITY 101 training with advisors from eight schools. “UNITY IS GROWING!!” she proclaimed, enthusiastic about the connections being made and the potential for youth councils to emerge in more communities.

Concluding the month, Harvey participated in the Securing the Future Panel at the 2024 Arizona Native Vote Forum. “It was amazing to include the actions from youth councils and emphasize that all of our Indigenous youth are not only the leaders of tomorrow but the leaders of today!” she asserted, underscoring her commitment to empowering young voices.

Reflecting on these experiences, Jalen Harvey conveyed a sense of empowerment and strength. “This month truly made me so much stronger as a person,” she stated, looking forward to the opportunities that October will bring for both herself and the Western Region.
