Jalen, a passionate youth leader, has made a significant impact on her community and beyond, with a month full of unforgettable experiences in January 2025. Her dedication to leadership, cultural preservation, and youth advocacy shines through every event and opportunity she embraces. From speaking at important tribal events to championing mental health for Indigenous youth, Jalen’s work this month has been both inspiring and transformative.
One of the most pivotal moments for Jalen in January was her trip to Whiteriver, Arizona, where she had the honor of serving as the Keynote Speaker at the 2025 White Mountain Apache Tribal Youth Council Inauguration. This event marked the beginning of a new chapter for these young leaders, and Jalen’s heartfelt speech left a lasting impact. “The work the White Mountain Apache Youth Council is doing in their community is nothing short of amazing,” she shared. She made sure the youth leaders knew they were supported: “I want to remind you that you are not alone on this journey… you’re part of a community that will always stand by you—through every challenge, every triumph, and every moment of growth.” Her words resonated deeply, affirming that leadership isn’t just about personal success, but about carrying forward the values of respect, resilience, and unity for the community.
In addition to this powerful speaking engagement, Jalen participated in the 30th Annual Indian Nations and Tribal Legislative Day on January 15th, marking her fourth year attending this event. This year was particularly special as she had the unique opportunity to shadow Hopi Chairman Timothy Nuvangyaoma. The experience, which included attending the Tribal Leaders Breakfast, the Annual Protocol Session at the Arizona State Capitol, and meetings with Arizona House Representatives, was an eye-opening chance for Jalen to learn from seasoned leaders. One of the highlights for her was introducing the Tohono O’odham Nation band before lunch. “Being able to introduce the Tohono O’odham Nation band before lunch was such an honor,” Jalen said, highlighting the power of representing and uplifting others within the broader Indigenous community.
Jalen’s work wasn’t limited to advocacy and leadership events alone. She also participated in the Lighting the Fire: Native Youth Navigating Advocacy in the Present and into the Future workshop, hosted by UNITY, where she witnessed youth from her own Hopi community stepping up and making their voices heard. “I’m beyond proud of them,” Jalen said, acknowledging the passion and purpose shown by the Yoeme Youth Council, the Young River Peoples Council, and the Future Inspired Native American Leaders Youth Council for their commitment to advocacy and making an impact.
On January 16th, Jalen had the honor of sharing her wisdom on culture and connectedness at the Sunrise Healing Community. Invited by Kiara Tanta-Quidgeon, a 25 Under 25 Honoree, Jalen spoke on the importance of healing and cultural revitalization for Indigenous youth. Kiara’s work is focused on empowering young people through healing, and Jalen’s participation in this event helped elevate the conversation on how culture plays a vital role in recovery and growth.
In another important moment, Jalen sat down for an interview with the Phoenix New Times on January 23rd, where she shared her thoughts on mental health for Indigenous youth. The topic is one close to her heart, and she’s passionate about shedding light on the challenges that Indigenous communities face in this area. “This issue is one that I’m passionate about, and being able to speak on it felt so important,” Jalen said, emphasizing the need for more awareness and support surrounding mental health.
Reflecting on the incredible month, Jalen shared, “The month of Tömö’paamuya (January) has been nothing short of extraordinary. From the connections made to the growth I’ve witnessed in myself and others, it’s been a month full of inspiration and purpose.” As she looks ahead to Powa’muya (February), Jalen is excited for the continued growth and the opportunities to inspire, educate, and empower others on her journey. With the UNITY Midyear Conference on the horizon, Jalen’s commitment to leadership, community, and youth advocacy continues to drive her forward.
Jalen’s unwavering dedication to her community, her leadership, and her passion for supporting Indigenous youth showcases the power of service and the importance of lifting up others. Her efforts to lead, inspire, and advocate are a testament to her commitment to shaping a better future for her community and beyond.
