January marked an important time of transition and growth for Vydell Willie of the Navajo Nation, a UNITY Earth Ambassador in the Western Region. As the new year began, Vydell stepped into a new academic semester at Northern Arizona University while continuing to stay active in leadership and personal development.
At the beginning of the month, Vydell concluded work with the Round Rock Chapter on January 9 before beginning the spring semester at Northern Arizona University on January 12. The transition created space to focus more fully on academic goals, campus involvement, and personal growth.
From January 16–19, Vydell traveled to Phoenix, Arizona to attend the 2026 UNITY Midyear Conference. The gathering brought together hundreds of Native youth leaders from across the country to participate in workshops, cultural activities, and leadership sessions focused on strengthening Native communities. During the conference, Vydell connected with fellow UNITY members, youth leaders, facilitators, and mentors who shared knowledge, encouragement, and ideas for youth-led change.
After returning to campus, Vydell continued prioritizing wellness and community engagement. On January 20, Vydell participated in Wellness Bingo hosted by the Northern Arizona University Office of Inclusion. The activity encouraged students to practice healthy habits, focus on self-care, and support one another’s well-being throughout the semester.
Two days later, on January 22, Vydell joined friends and peers at the NAU Indian Center for a vision board activity. During the session, participants reflected on their goals, values, and personal aspirations while creating visual reminders of the paths they hope to follow in the coming year.
Reflecting on the month, Vydell shared that January served as a meaningful reset and opportunity for self-reflection. “January marked a fresh beginning for me. Starting a new semester, stepping away from work, attending UNITY Midyear, and taking time for wellness and reflection helped me reset my focus, grow as a leader, and set clear intentions for the months ahead.”
Experiences like these reflect the broader mission of UNITY’s Earth Ambassador program, which encourages Native youth to strengthen leadership skills while supporting their physical, mental, spiritual, and social well-being. Through conferences, campus engagement, and personal reflection, Earth Ambassadors like Vydell continue to demonstrate how Native youth are building strong futures for themselves and their communities.
