UNITY Female Co-President Kaytlynn Johnston: A Youth Leader Shines with Dedication to Community and Self-Care

In the face of personal hurdles and with an unwavering commitment to her community, Kaytlynn has taken on multiple roles that highlight her growth and dedication to both herself and the people around her. Her journey has been one of resilience, leadership, and the power of positive change, all while remaining deeply connected to her roots and her tribe.

Earlier this month, Kaytlynn took part in a cherished family tradition, something that has grounded her through the years. “In the beginning of the month, my family and I went out and got our own Christmas tree, which is a family tradition we have. We just buy a tree tag and go out together to get a tree,” she shared. This simple yet meaningful ritual represents more than just the start of the holiday season for her—it symbolizes the bond she shares with her loved ones, a reminder of the importance of family and tradition in her life.

But it wasn’t just the holidays that marked a significant turning point for this inspiring youth. At the end of December, Kaytlynn participated in the Miss Bishop Paiute Tribe pageant and was crowned Queen of her tribe. “I was very grateful to be surrounded by my amazing friends and family that night,” she reflected. Her crowning moment as a female co-president and queen is not only a reflection of her community’s recognition of her leadership potential but also an opportunity for her to take on new responsibilities and participate in events that contribute to the well-being of her tribe.

Her leadership role, as both queen and co-president, offers her a platform to make a lasting impact on her tribe, but it is her honesty about her own struggles that makes her stand out. “I’ve been struggling very badly with my mental health and my self-image but I’ve been working very hard in my job and I’m working on my mental health as often as I can,” she shared openly. Acknowledging the challenges she faces, she continues to work on herself, setting an example for others in her community. It’s a powerful reminder that leadership doesn’t require perfection—it’s about perseverance and taking care of oneself while striving to support others.

Despite these personal challenges, Kaytlynn maintains a positive outlook and a commitment to giving back to her community. “I work very early in the morning but I’ll be trying to do more with my afternoons such as getting out more in the community and just trying to get out more in general,” she said. She recognizes that the small steps, such as simply spending time outside to combat the “winter blues” and get fresh air, can have a big impact on both mental health and well-being.

Her story is not just about leadership—it’s about hope and resilience. “I hope anyone who is struggling this holiday season just knows it’s normal and it will get better, just don’t give up on yourself,” she encourages. This message of hope is not only relevant during the holidays but serves as an ongoing reminder that struggles are a part of life, and it’s important to keep going, no matter what.

Kaytlynn also offers important advice to others facing similar struggles: “Be strong, be yourself, and remember even when you feel alone and you don’t constantly have someone checking in on you, that doesn’t mean you are less than in any way. Remember positive self-talk, and always be your own biggest cheerleader.” Her words inspire others to embrace their own worth, even during the toughest times.

As Kaytlynn steps into her role as Queen of the Bishop Paiute Tribe, she embodies the qualities of strength, courage, and compassion. Through her journey, she is not only representing her tribe with pride but also inspiring others to prioritize their mental health, push through difficult times, and find strength in community and self-care. Her story proves that even in the face of hardship, growth, leadership, and hope are always within reach.
