As the seasons change, so too does the landscape of Native youth leadership, with individuals like Ian Teller, a Diné (Navajo) leader from Tsaile, Arizona, exemplifying the spirit of servant leadership and community engagement.
A national UNITY 25 Under 25 honoree and a representative of the Center for Native American Youth (CNAY), Ian’s recent endeavors highlight the transformative power of Indigenous youth in shaping their communities and the nation.

Bridging Generations Through Civic Engagement

In the heart of the Navajo Nation, Ian took center stage by introducing Governor Tim Walz during a historic rally in Window Rock, Arizona. This event marked a significant moment, as it brought national political figures directly into dialogue with Indigenous communities. Reflecting on the experience, Ian shared, “Meeting Harris and Walz was an amazing opportunity personally, but also an amazing accomplishment for Indian Country. Meeting both Democratic candidates for the top positions in the Executive branch allowed me to share my perspectives as a Navajo and Indigenous Youth. Although they did not prove victorious in their campaign, I take pride in being given the opportunity to be elevated to those spaces to ensure Native voices were heard.”

Ian’s commitment to civic engagement extended to his participation in the “Walk to the Polls” event organized by Protect the Sacred. Alongside actors Mark Ruffalo and Cara Jade Myers, Ian joined community members in a three-mile walk to a ballot drop box, commemorating 100 years of Native American citizenship and honoring the resilience of Indigenous peoples. The event aimed to encourage voter turnout among young Indigenous people and address the barriers they face in the electoral process. People.com

“When I volunteered to help Protect the Sacred with their Walk to the polls event with Mark Ruffalo, I did not expect to walk away from that experience having Mark Ruffalo know my name. I mean, come on, that’s the Hulk. Seeing so many community members come out to meet Ruffalo while raising awareness for voting was a special moment. It gave me a newfound sense of empowerment to be more active in the community and engage civically.”

Elevating Indigenous Voices at the National Level

Ian’s journey of leadership culminated at the White House Tribal Youth Forum, where he provided the opening prayer, invoking the sacred deities of his tribe. This act of cultural affirmation in a space of national significance underscored the importance of Indigenous representation in policymaking. Ian described the moment as moving, stating, “The White House tribal Youth Forum is among my favorite memories of 2024. I was able to engage with inspiring native youth from around the country and make lasting friendships. I could even provide the opening prayer, which became a highlight moment. Using the names of my tribe’s sacred deities in my prayer, in a place with such power, was a moving experience and made me think of my ancestors who endured for me to one day stand in that space. I learned so much about myself and the future of Native country through the incredible talent that was in attendance. We have much to look forward to.”

The forum brought together over 100 Native American youth from across the country to engage with federal officials on key issues impacting their communities, including food sovereignty, climate change, mental health, and missing and murdered Indigenous persons. Discussions emphasized youth leadership, preservation of culture, and destigmatizing mental illness. The White House

Ian’s experiences serve as a testament to the power of Indigenous youth in driving change and uplifting their communities. His servant leadership, rooted in cultural heritage and civic responsibility, offers a blueprint for other Native youth aspiring to make a difference. As Ian continues his journey, his actions remind us that the future of Indian Country is bright, led by passionate and dedicated young leaders committed to honoring their ancestors and empowering future generations.
