Both middle and high school-age youth in attendance had the opportunity to engage in the Cherokee culture throughout the day, including panel discussions, breakout sessions, and activities. This year’s theme — Know Your Nation — centered on providing a day for Cherokee youth to be immersed in an environment to learn about their Cherokee heritage, history, and language. I had the opportunity to co-moderate the first panel of the day focused on Knowing Your Nation which included multiple Cherokee Nation leaders. I also served as the emcee for the afternoon session of the summit. The topic of Knowing Your Nation is one that I hold close as it was the platform that I shared as Miss Cherokee 2021-22 and continue to do so as part of being a UNITY 25U25 recipient. Throughout my life, I have always been encouraged and taught to be active and engaged within my Cherokee culture. As such, I have a passion for encouraging all Cherokees to discover their passions and interests and actively engage to perpetuate the Cherokee culture for generations to come. Gathering in Tahlequah to assist with the Youth Summit was very special to see so many Cherokee youth engaging with the Cherokee culture. It is my hope that each attendee learned more about their Nation and will continue to build upon this knowledge in their own families and communities. This was a very meaningful event for all involved and I look forward to more Cherokee youth attending events in the future so that we may all collectively contribute to strengthening the cultural sovereignty of the Cherokee Nation.
