On December 15, 2020, the Minnesota Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Task Force released the MMIW Task Force Report to the Minnesota Legislature and the public. In 2019, the Minnesota Legislature created a Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Task Force and charged that group with providing a picture of the problem, identifying its causes, and proposing solutions. The Task Force found that the root causes of violence against Indigenous women include historical trauma and colonization, racism, and sexual objectification of Indigenous women and girls and that risk factors for becoming a MMIW include child welfare system involvement, domestic violence, incarceration, and trafficking. The report includes a “Call to Action” that we hope will inspire change in Minnesota and lead to similar efforts in other states.
