This November, Nizhoni Deschene brought together voices from across Indian Country to lead a powerful conversation on the future of energy, sovereignty, and sustainability. As the organizer and moderator of the “Tribal Energy Roundtable: 2025 Call to Action,” he created a space where leaders, advocates, and community members could engage in meaningful dialogue on one of the most critical issues facing Native communities today. Hosted at the ASUC Senate Chambers at UC Berkeley, the event welcomed around 100 attendees representing diverse tribal nations and perspectives.

The roundtable served as a dynamic community event rooted in civic engagement, encouraging open discussion on tribal energy development, policy barriers, and innovative solutions. In collaboration with the National Intertribal Energy Council (NITEC) and Native Nuclear, Nizhoni elevated the conversation to a national level—bringing together experts and decision-makers to focus on actionable strategies for the future. The event also featured a special address from U.S. Senator Ruben Gallego, reinforcing the importance of Native voices in shaping energy policy.

As both organizer and moderator, Nizhoni guided conversations that centered Indigenous sovereignty and the need for community-driven solutions. The roundtable format allowed participants to share their experiences, challenges, and ideas, creating a collaborative environment where knowledge and strategy could grow. Through his leadership, he ensured that the discussion remained focused on practical outcomes and long-term impact for tribal nations.

Beyond policy and strategy, the gathering also reflected the power of connection and shared identity. “This community event was special because it was the first time many Natives came together without their respective communities and chose to connect with one another over the same song and dance,” Nizhoni shared. This moment highlighted how cultural unity continues to ground even the most forward-looking conversations.

The event also served as an educational initiative, providing attendees with deeper insight into the intersection of energy, sustainability, and Indigenous rights. By creating space for learning and collaboration, Nizhoni is helping build a future where Native communities lead in energy innovation while maintaining cultural and environmental integrity.

Through this work, Nizhoni continues to demonstrate that leadership is about creating opportunities for others to be heard and empowered. His ability to bring together diverse voices and guide meaningful conversations reflects a strong commitment to both community and advocacy.

The UNITY Earth Ambassador Program continues to uplift leaders like Nizhoni Deschene who are driving change in spaces that shape the future of Indigenous communities. This year’s cohort represents Native youth who are stepping into leadership roles at local, national, and global levels—advocating for sovereignty, sustainability, and innovation. Through events like the Tribal Energy Roundtable, they are ensuring that Indigenous voices are not only part of the conversation—they are leading it.
