This October, Jizelle Juan stepped into a season of powerful connection—where culture, leadership, and youth engagement came together across communities. She began the month by traveling with the Young River Peoples Council (YRPC) to the Quechan Indian Tribe, where they met with a growing youth council to share their journey, offer guidance, and build relationships. Through storytelling and mentorship, Jizelle helped uplift the next generation of leaders. “We shared about what YRPC is, how we got started, and offered advice as they are a newer council,” she said, highlighting the importance of supporting other youth councils as they grow.

The visit also included a vibrant cultural exchange. Jizelle and her group shared basket dancing, social songs, and traditional teachings, while the Quechan Youth Council shared their own songs, creating a space of mutual respect and learning. These moments reflect the strength of intertribal relationships and the role youth play in keeping traditions alive. “October reminded me how powerful culture and youth leadership are when they come together,” she reflected.

Back home, Jizelle remained deeply engaged in cultural events that promote wellness and identity. She attended a Chicken Scratch event, encouraging movement and community health, and participated in Piipaash Matasheevm, a traditional bird gathering filled with singing, dancing, and celebration. Through her dance group, she performed O’odham and Piipaash dances and took part in a giveaway—continuing traditions that connect generations. One of the most meaningful moments came when her group revived a dance that had not been performed in over 10 years, bringing an important cultural practice back to life.

Her civic engagement extended into leadership meetings and regional collaboration. Jizelle participated in YRPC executive and general meetings, as well as an O’odham sibling tribes gathering, where youth councils shared updates, songs, and ideas for strengthening their communities. These spaces allow youth to lead conversations, exchange knowledge, and build unity across tribal nations.

Jizelle also stepped into important community spaces where youth voices are shaping the future. She met with representatives from Johns Hopkins University to provide input on Salt River’s “5 in 5 Initiative,” a community effort to increase life expectancy. Later, she was invited to join a community dinner with tribal leaders and respected members, where she was asked to be part of the initiative’s committee. This invitation reflects the trust placed in her as a young leader and the growing recognition of youth perspectives in decision-making. “I learned that our voices truly matter,” she shared.

Throughout the month, Jizelle continued to show up in support of others—attending the Miss Indian Arizona Pageant, celebrating the newly crowned titleholder, and participating in powwows and community events where culture and leadership intersect. Each moment reinforced her commitment to uplifting her community through presence, participation, and pride.

The UNITY Earth Ambassador Program continues to uplift leaders like Jizelle Juan who are strengthening their communities through cultural revitalization, mentorship, and advocacy. This year’s cohort represents a powerful network of Indigenous youth who are building relationships across tribes, honoring traditions, and stepping into leadership roles that shape the future. Through song, service, and connection, they are ensuring that culture and community continue to thrive for generations to come.
