Tesuque Pueblo Youth Coalition Supports Tribal Leadership Summit and Launches Community Newsletter

NM ICWA Tribal leadership summit pg 3 - Donna Quintana

The Tesuque Pueblo Youth Coalition stepped into a role of leadership and service this February as they supported the New Mexico Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) Summit, a gathering of representatives from all 23 Tribal Nations in the state. The event, held across San Felipe and Tesuque Pueblos, centered on the protection and well-being of Native children—one of the most spiritually significant responsibilities in tribal communities.

The youth coalition was invited to assist during the summit, an honor that reflected their growing presence and leadership within the Pueblo and beyond. Throughout the day, youth members registered tribal leaders, guided them to their seats, assisted with meals, and ensured the event ran smoothly. Their respectful service and commitment did not go unnoticed—each youth member received a certificate of appreciation, and the coalition as a whole was awarded a plaque in recognition of their contributions.

More than just logistical support, the summit provided a valuable learning experience for the youth. They were introduced to the core principles of ICWA, gaining a foundational understanding of the law’s importance in protecting Native children, preserving families, and reinforcing tribal sovereignty. The spiritual significance of this work aligns with the coalition’s focus on spiritual wellness, recognizing that cultural identity and community responsibility are deeply interconnected.

In addition to their role at the summit, the Tesuque Pueblo Youth Coalition has also taken steps to enhance communication and connection within their own community. In early 2024, the youth launched a quarterly newsletter designed to keep Tesuque Pueblo families informed about local events, youth initiatives, cultural highlights, and more. This initiative empowers youth to share their voices, document community activities, and promote engagement across generations.

Despite facing technical challenges submitting their newsletters to UNITY reports, the coalition remains determined to share their story and expand their impact. From spiritual service at a statewide summit to strengthening internal community ties, the Tesuque Pueblo Youth Coalition continues to lead with heart, purpose, and cultural pride.
