Community Events: Honoring Legacy Through Celebration

This July, UNITY Earth Ambassador Vydell Willie found himself in the heart of community celebrations and civic milestones across the Navajo Nation. He began the month by attending the Day 3 Summer Council Session, where his uncle’s Country Western band was honored for 25 years of dedication to the Nation’s cultural landscape. The recognition came from Council Delegate Hon. Carl Slater and Speaker Hon. Crystalyne Curley, marking a powerful moment of legacy and leadership.

“It was a proud and memorable moment for my family,” said Vydell. As the band was recognized on the Council floor, Vydell reflected on how storytelling, music, and visibility are vital in uplifting Indigenous communities.

Civic Engagement: Walking for Health, Walking with Purpose

Just a day later, Vydell participated in the Just Move It campaign—a grassroots walk/run event dedicated to promoting wellness across Navajo communities. Hosted at the Lukachukai Chapter House, the event brought together all generations for a celebration of health.

“Just Move It is a fun walk/run series that promotes physical activity and encourages healthy living throughout the community,” Vydell explained. Beyond the miles walked, it was a reminder that civic engagement can take many forms—especially when it brings communities together for healing and health.

Service Projects: Youth Collaboration and Peer Mentorship

One of the most inspiring highlights of Vydell’s month was a message he received from another Native youth after the 2025 National UNITY Conference. Moved by Vydell’s role and presence, the youth reached out on Instagram with a project idea and a proposal to collaborate.

“They were inspired by my role and wanted to work alongside me to bring their vision to life,” said Vydell. The message sparked an ongoing dialogue, as the two youth begin planning a possible community-based project together. This peer-to-peer outreach shows how the Earth Ambassador program is already encouraging mentorship, innovation, and youth-led impact across Native nations.

Cultural & Educational Initiatives: Stepping into Leadership

Vydell also traveled to San Diego, California in late June for the 2025 National UNITY Conference, participating in the Pre-Conference Training and a week-long gathering of over 3,000 Native youth and advisors. There, he was officially recognized as one of UNITY’s Earth Ambassadors, a title reserved for youth leaders who commit to serving as advocates for environmental sustainability in Indigenous communities.

“During the conference, I was officially honored as one of UNITY’s Earth Ambassadors… It was an incredible honor and a highlight of my summer,” he shared. Through leadership workshops and national connections, Vydell walked away energized and committed to action.

As part of his continued leadership journey, Vydell will attend the Round Rock Chapter Planning Meeting on August 6. “I plan to introduce myself and share my platform as a UNITY Earth Ambassador,” he said. His goal is to build lasting partnerships with tribal officials and local residents to support youth and environmental projects.

About the UNITY Earth Ambassador Program

The UNITY Earth Ambassador Program is designed to elevate Indigenous youth voices in the environmental movement by providing mentorship, training, and opportunities for direct impact. Ambassadors work on climate action, traditional ecological knowledge, and cultural preservation throughout the year.

Vydell Willie’s journey—from celebrating family milestones to preparing to speak before local government—demonstrates the power of youth leadership when rooted in culture, service, and collaboration. As this year’s Earth Ambassador cohort begins their work, Vydell is proving that Indigenous youth are not just the future—they are leading right now.
