Lauren Shelly Pina, San Carlos Apache, former UNITY 25 Under 25 honoree, shared inspiring words last month during Suicide Prevention Month at the Life is Precious Conference in San Carlos, Arizona. Pina spoke about her journey to Penn State University, where she’s a student. “I knew I wanted to be an engineer since junior high. During my senior year, I was accepted into 20 colleges. I knew I wanted to get off the reservation. My mom encouraged me. She said there’s more to see off the reservation and you can always come back. I was raised hearing ‘the sky is the limit and there’s so much more to life.’ I wanted to explore the world and I didn’t regret it one bit,” said Pina.

Mesa, AZ – May 1, 2020 — UNITY is pleased to announce the fourth class of its “25 under 25 Native Youth Leaders” national recognition program that honors Native American and Alaskan Native youth. The program, launched in 2014, recognizes and celebrates the achievements of 25 outstanding Native youth leaders under the age 25, every other year. UNITY 25 Under 25 raises awareness at Columbia University
Former UNITY 25 Under 25 awardee Kellian Staggers, Dine, has been active in spreading awareness regarding native and indigenous people and communities since arriving to Columbia University. Staggars was an active member of the UNITY Navajo Prep Naat’aanii Youth Council while attending Navajo Preparatory School, which has prepared her for her college endeavors. In light of Columbia’s failure to name Indigenous Peoples’ Day as an official University holiday, Columbia’s Native American Council organized a day-long gathering at the Sundial on Monday rallying students to pen statements to the University Senate advocating for official recognition.

Congrats to Freddy Gipp, 25, Apache Tribe of Oklahoma, for being named a Dreamstarter! Olympic Gold medalist Billy Mill’s Running Strong for American Indian Youth organization provides grants to community non-profits who will mentor young Dreamstarters and work with them to implement a project inspired by the young person’s dream for her or his community. This year UNITY will work closely with Dreamstarter Freddy Gipp to help turn his dream into a reality.
