Alyssa Mosley, a proud citizen of the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Tribal Nation of Bridgeton, New Jersey, embodies the essence of servant leadership.
As a UNITY 25 Under 25 awardee, she has dedicated herself to cultural revitalization, intertribal connection, and advocacy for Indigenous sovereignty. Her recent endeavors have taken her across borders and into dialogues that honor the past while shaping the future.

Reconnecting Lenape Communities Across Borders

In a heartfelt journey to strengthen ties among Lenape peoples, Alyssa visited the Munsee-Delaware Nation and the Eelünaapéewi Lahkéewiit (Delaware Nation at Moraviantown) in Ontario, Canada. These visits were more than ceremonial; they were acts of unity and cultural exchange. Alyssa shared stories, traditions, and visions for the future, fostering a sense of shared identity and purpose among the Lenape diaspora. “This experience was deeply meaningful as we shared stories, traditions, and ideas to strengthen our bonds,” she shared.

Engaging in International Dialogue on Colonization

Alyssa’s commitment to advocacy led her to a significant meeting with the Consulate of the Netherlands. There, accompanied by her uncle, Chief Urie Ridgeway, they discussed the enduring impacts of colonization on the Lenape people, bringing historical truths to the forefront of international discourse. It was an empowering moment to share our history and advocate for greater understanding and dialogue about our experiences as an Indigenous community,” said Alyssa. This engagement highlighted the necessity of acknowledging past injustices to pave the way for reconciliation and mutual understanding.

Embracing Cultural Practices and Personal Growth

Balancing tradition with personal development, Alyssa remains active in her community’s cultural life. She participates in powwows, celebrating and preserving Lenape traditions through song and dance. Her involvement in field hockey reflects her dedication to teamwork and discipline, qualities that translate into her leadership roles. Venturing into new experiences, Alyssa took up surfing, embracing the challenges it presented. This endeavor taught her resilience and the value of stepping outside her comfort zone, lessons she brings back to her community to inspire other Native youth.

Inspiring Future Generations Through Servant Leadership

Alyssa’s journey is a testament to the power of servant leadership rooted in cultural pride and community engagement. Her efforts to connect Lenape communities, engage in meaningful dialogues on colonization, and embrace personal growth serve as a beacon for other Native youth. Through her actions, she demonstrates that honoring one’s heritage and stepping into leadership roles can coexist, fostering a future where Indigenous voices lead with strength and compassion.

As Alyssa continues her work, she embodies the spirit of unity and the enduring resilience of the Lenape people, ensuring that their stories and traditions thrive for generations to come.
