Rooted in Prayer: Jamie Crowe Leads Through Culture, Reflection, and Renewal

Leadership is not always about public events, meetings, or packed community calendars. Sometimes, leadership begins at home, in prayer, in tradition, and in the quiet preparation needed to keep growing. For Jamie Crowe, a Pueblo of Tesuque youth leader and Southwest Executive Committee Member, March was a time of renewal, reflection, and cultural grounding. Her report is a powerful reminder that Native youth leadership is not separate from identity, family, community, or spiritual wellness. It grows from those roots.

During the month, Jamie focused on her studies and began preparing for her final semester research class in the fall. She shared that she felt both nervous and excited, showing the honest balance many Native youth experience as they prepare for major academic milestones. By prioritizing her education, Jamie continues to build the knowledge and confidence needed to serve her community and represent Native youth with purpose. Her academic journey is also part of her leadership path, strengthening the skills she can bring back to her region and to the National UNITY Council.

Jamie shared that March is always a meaningful season for her, rooted in renewal and prayer. While she did not have the opportunity to conduct outreach or attend meetings with other youth councils during the month, she remained active in a different but equally important way: fulfilling traditional obligations at home in the Pueblo of Tesuque. Her reflection honors the reality that leadership in Native communities often includes cultural responsibility, prayer, and being present for one’s people. These responsibilities may not always appear on a public agenda, but they are deeply connected to wellness, identity, and service.

Jamie shared, “Being able to be home around my traditions and culture is always healing and meaningful to me.”

Her words reflect how culture can restore and strengthen Native youth leaders, helping them stay grounded as they continue their work.

Jamie’s connection to home is central to her leadership. She shared, “I am proud to be where I am from.”

That pride carries power. For Native youth, being rooted in community and culture can become a source of confidence, belonging, and direction. Jamie’s reflection shows how cultural identity supports leadership by reminding young people who they are, where they come from, and what they carry forward.

She also shared, “Prayer always holds such an important part of my life.”

Through prayer and tradition, Jamie continues to nurture the spiritual wellness that supports her leadership and her role within UNITY.

Jamie’s report shows that servant leadership does not always require a microphone, meeting room, or formal event. Sometimes, it looks like honoring traditional responsibilities, staying committed to education, and allowing culture to be a source of healing and strength. Her month reflects the National UNITY Council’s commitment to supporting the spiritual, mental, physical, and social development of Native youth. By staying connected to her Pueblo, her traditions, and her prayers, Jamie models a form of leadership that is grounded, humble, and deeply meaningful.

The National UNITY Council provides a space for Native youth, Native Hawaiian youth, and Alaskan Native youth to come together, study common concerns, strengthen leadership skills, and speak with a positive and unified voice. Through cultural grounding, education, and regional representation, leaders like Jamie help carry UNITY’s mission forward by inspiring hope and changing lives for the better in Indian Country.

As a Southwest Regional Representative on the National UNITY Council Executive Committee, Jamie Crowe plays an important role in representing youth voices from her region while helping strengthen UNITY’s national network. Her reflection reminds us that Native youth leadership is not only built through action in the community, but also through prayer, preparation, cultural responsibility, and pride in where we come from.
