For Amaya Escalante (Pascua Yaqui Tribe), July was a month dedicated to leadership, cultural preservation, and civic engagement. Following her attendance at the 2025 National UNITY Conference, Amaya presented her conference report to the Pascua Yaqui Tribal Council during one of their biweekly meetings — a trip made possible through the council’s sponsorship. While there, she spoke directly to young people in her community, sharing encouragement and advice. “I encouraged them not to be afraid to step into leadership roles — our voices matter, and we are capable of making a difference.”

Much of Amaya’s month was also spent immersed in language revitalization efforts. Volunteering with Itom Yoyowam Summer Youth Language Camp and the Family Language Classes hosted by the Department of Language and Culture and the Miss Pascua Yaqui Program, she supported both youth and families as they learned their language together. “Seeing young ones speak our language and families learning side by side reminded me how deeply rooted our culture is in community.” These programs brought generations together, underscoring the vital connection between language, identity, and belonging.

Amaya also engaged in tribal governance by attending two constitutional reform meetings hosted by the Pascua Yaqui Tribal Council and Administration, held in both Old Pascua and New Pascua. Today, she joins the Yoeme Youth Council to participate in a youth-focused constitutional reform session, ensuring that younger voices help shape the tribe’s future.

“Both of these experiences showed me that leadership isn’t just about titles — it’s about showing up, staying connected to who we are, and helping others do the same.”

As the Western Region Representative on the National UNITY Council Executive Committee, Amaya helps represent the UNITY Network so that common concerns are studied and addressed with a positive and unified voice. She works with fellow leaders to guide UNITY’s national priorities, foster collaboration between youth councils, and ensure the perspectives of Western Region Native youth are heard. Her work at home — from language preservation to policy engagement — mirrors the mission she carries nationally: uplifting Native youth, honoring heritage, and inspiring future leaders across Indian Country.
