Watson Whitford, known by his spiritual name Wapanatak, meaning “Morning Star,” stands as a beacon of cultural pride, environmental stewardship, and youth leadership. Representing the Diné Nation and enrolled in the Chippewa Cree Tribe, Watson bridges two vibrant Indigenous communities, calling both Rocky Boy, Montana, and Red Mesa, Utah, home.
Deeply rooted in his heritage, Watson honors the teachings of his ancestors through active participation in traditional ceremonies. His cultural journey includes singing, dancing, speaking his languages, and offering prayers—sacred practices that continue to shape his values and guide his path forward.
A graduate of Navajo Preparatory School, Watson is now in his third year at Montana State University in Bozeman, where he is pursuing a degree in Environmental Horticulture. His academic focus reflects a profound respect for the Earth and a commitment to sustainability informed by Indigenous knowledge systems.
Watson’s leadership journey began in 2021 when he joined the UNITY family as an Earth Ambassador, igniting his passion for protecting the environment and empowering Native communities. From 2022 to 2024, he served as the Rocky Mountain Area Representative, where he amplified Native youth voices across the region. Today, he proudly enters his second term as Male Co-President of the National UNITY Council, honored to serve Native youth from across North America.
His work with UNITY has been a defining force in his leadership development. Beyond UNITY, Watson is a member of the Indigenous Youth Leadership Coalition under the U.S. Department of State and actively participates in the United Nations Association of the United States of America (UNA-USA). Through these roles, he advocates for Indigenous rights and perspectives on a global stage, demonstrating the power of Indigenous youth in shaping a more just and inclusive world.
