Reflecting with Purpose: Jamie Crowe Embraces Leadership and Community in the Southwest

Not every month is about big travel or packed schedules. Sometimes leadership looks like slowing down, showing up locally, and taking time to reflect. This December, Jamie Crowe of the Pueblo of Tesuque did just that—centering community, gratitude, and growth as a Southwest Executive Committee Member of the National UNITY Council.

In Santa Fe, New Mexico, Jamie spent time alongside their youth council helping prepare for their community Christmas party. Even in a quieter month, their commitment to service remained steady. Supporting a local holiday gathering may seem simple, but it strengthens bonds between youth, families, and elders—keeping community at the heart of leadership.

December also became a time of personal reflection. Jamie shared, “December is a time for reflection of the year that was had for myself.” Taking space to evaluate growth and future goals is an important part of strong leadership. They continued, “I was able to slow down and really analyze what I had been doing and things I could be doing more of.”

That intentional pause speaks volumes.

Serving on the Executive Committee carries responsibility—not just to represent Native youth, but to continually grow as a leader. Jamie expressed deep gratitude for that role, sharing, “I really appreciate everything I have and just understanding the significance of my EC position and how much that truly does mean to me.” Recognizing the weight and honor of serving Native youth across Indian Country reflects maturity and dedication.

The National UNITY Council (NUC) exists to develop leadership skills among Native youth by drawing upon Native heritage and teachings. Through reflection, service, and community engagement, leaders like Jamie strengthen their ability to guide discussions, represent regional voices, and uplift youth across tribal communities—including Native Hawaiian and Alaskan Native communities within the UNITY network.

The NUC, representing over 300 affiliated youth councils nationwide, provides a unified platform where Native youth study issues, establish priorities, and return home ready to create positive change. Even during quieter months, reflection and local service are part of that larger mission.

As a Southwest Regional Representative on the National UNITY Council Executive Committee, Jamie plays an important role in elevating youth voices from their region while collaborating with fellow representatives and Co-Presidents to guide national priorities. Through steady service and thoughtful reflection, Jamie continues to grow as a leader—grounded in gratitude, committed to community, and inspired to do even more in the year ahead.
