From the moment youth leaders arrive, the energy of the UNITY Midyear Conference is something you can feel in the room. For Alina Sanchez of the Miwok Wilton Rancheria, the 2026 UNITY Midyear Conference in Phoenix, Arizona was a powerful reminder of why Native youth leadership matters.

Held from January 16–19, the gathering brought together Native youth, advisors, Earth Ambassadors, and UNITY leaders from across the country. Throughout the weekend, Alina had the opportunity to connect with youth representing many different tribes and communities while helping facilitate several parts of the conference program.

During the event, Alina hosted a workshop, assisted with a breakout session, and served as an emcee for the General Assembly, helping guide participants through one of the conference’s main gatherings. She also spent time engaging with exhibitors, Earth Ambassadors, and youth councils who attended the event.

Beyond the sessions and activities, the most meaningful part of the experience for Alina was the opportunity to connect with youth leaders from across the country and hear their ideas for creating positive change in their communities.
Throughout the conference, keynote speakers shared stories and encouragement, while youth participants discussed solutions to issues affecting Native communities today. The conversations and relationships built during these gatherings are part of what continues to strengthen the UNITY network each year.
Reflecting on the experience, Alina summed it up simply:
“This is what UNITY is all about.”
Through leadership roles like facilitating workshops and guiding conference sessions, Alina continues to support UNITY’s mission of empowering Native youth to lead with confidence, culture, and community connection.
