This month, McKaylin Peters stepped fully into her role as a leader, organizer, and bridge-builder within her community. As a Co-Founder and Advisor of the Menominee UNITY Youth Council, she helped guide the next generation of leaders through elections at the start of the school year, ensuring the council remains active, engaged, and youth-driven. Weekly meetings have already resumed, creating consistent space for mentorship and growth. “We’re back into our school schedule with the kids meeting every Wednesday,” she shared, emphasizing the importance of structure and continuity in youth leadership.

Her civic engagement extended beyond her reservation as she traveled to the Mille Lacs Reservation in Minnesotaalongside her Vice Chairman to support a wild rice re-seeding initiative. There, they secured 25,000 pounds of wild rice, strengthening a vital intertribal partnership rooted in trust and shared responsibility. “Tribal to tribal relationships are important and I’m learning how to cultivate those,” McKaylin reflected. These efforts highlight her commitment to sovereignty, sustainability, and collaboration across Native nations.

McKaylin also remained active in community-centered events, including participating in the College of Menominee Nation golf outing on the Oneida Reservation. While it may seem like a casual setting, she recognized the deeper value of connection. “It’s a great way to network for me,” she said, showing that leadership often happens in everyday spaces where relationships are built and strengthened.

In addition, she and her youth council members attended the grand opening of their tribe’s community kitchen, supporting local initiatives that promote food access and wellness. These smaller moments of presence reflect her understanding that leadership isn’t just about large-scale events—it’s about consistently showing up for community.

Her most impactful service project this month, however, came in response to a devastating tornado that struck her reservation earlier this year. What followed was a historic and powerful collaboration. The Menominee Tribal Legislature, Menominee UNITY Youth Council, and Menominee County came together for the first time to host a tree replanting event in the most affected area. McKaylin took the lead in organizing every detail—from coordinating planning meetings to arranging food, drum groups, and sourcing trees from the tribal nursery.

“This was my big event of the month… I facilitated all the planning meetings, I coordinated everything,” she shared. The result was more than just restoration—it was the beginning of a lasting partnership between tribal and county leadership. “It was beautiful to see this event come to life as I worked so hard on it with my Chairman,” she said. “He really let me take hold of this and make it mine.” Through her leadership, McKaylin not only helped restore the land but also strengthened the relationships that will protect it moving forward.

Her work reflects a deeper lesson she’s carrying forward. “I am learning the importance of relationships within leadership,” she shared—a truth that continues to guide her journey as an Earth Ambassador.

The UNITY Earth Ambassador Program uplifts leaders like McKaylin Peters who are transforming their communities through action, collaboration, and cultural responsibility. This year’s cohort is building more than projects—they are building relationships, restoring lands, and creating pathways for future generations to thrive. Through their work, they remind us that true leadership is rooted in connection—to people, to land, and to each other.
