Healing Through Leadership: Jamie Crowe Champions Youth Wellness in Oklahoma City

Even while facing personal health challenges, Jamie Crowe of the Pueblo of Tesuque chose to lean into leadership and purpose. October was a demanding month, but it became a powerful reminder that healing and service often walk hand in hand.

As a Southwest Executive Committee Member of the National UNITY Council, Jamie traveled to Oklahoma City in mid-October to participate in a UNITY Healing Circle Training alongside UNITY staff, Earth Ambassadors, and fellow Executive Committee members. These trainings are designed to create safe, culturally grounded spaces where Native youth can openly discuss challenges impacting their communities while building resilience and peer support skills.

Healing Circle Trainings focus on addressing issues such as mental health, substance misuse, historical trauma, and leadership development—always rooted in Indigenous teachings and community values. By attending this training, Jamie helped support youth who are ready to step forward as changemakers in their communities.

Reflecting on the experience, Jamie shared, “Being able to engage in Healing Circle Trainings is important to me because of the impact made on the youth who attend these gatherings.” They continued, “It is truly inspiring to me to be able to witness firsthand the change that the youth want to ignite for their communities. Addressing significant issues that impact their people.”

Despite navigating health concerns during the month, Jamie remained committed to supporting Native youth. That dedication embodies servant leadership—showing up not because it is easy, but because it matters.

The National UNITY Council (NUC) is committed to developing leadership skills among Native youth by drawing upon Native heritage and teachings. Programs like Healing Circle Trainings empower Native youth—including Native Hawaiian and Alaskan Natives—to confront real challenges in their communities while building solutions rooted in culture and unity.

The NUC represents more than 300 affiliated youth councils nationwide and provides a forum where Native youth can study issues, debate solutions, and return home equipped to lead with confidence and compassion. Jamie’s participation in Healing Circle Training reflects UNITY’s broader mission to inspire hope and create meaningful change in Indian Country.

As a Southwest Regional Representative on the National UNITY Council Executive Committee, Jamie plays an essential role in guiding national conversations and supporting youth-led initiatives. Through resilience, compassion, and unwavering commitment—even in the face of personal challenges—Jamie continues to uplift Native youth and strengthen the UNITY network.
