Alina Sanchez (Miwok – Wilton Rancheria), Pacific Regional Representative on the National UNITY Council Executive Committee, spent her month surrounded by community, creativity, and compassion. Through cultural workshops, healing circles, and community service, Alina demonstrated how leadership can blossom through connection — one shared story, sweet treat, and heartfelt step at a time.

She began the month with a Baking Workshop hosted by the Native Sisters Circle Organization, where one of the group’s beloved aunties led participants in creating culturally inspired cupcakes. Each design — from feathers and fire to frybread and acorns — celebrated Native identity through color, texture, and symbolism. “I was able to learn fun methods to create designs, and potentially pursue a baking career,” Alina joked. “All jokes aside, it was a lovely, connecting space filled with much laughter, love, and joy.” The workshop blended creativity with culture, offering a sweet reminder that learning together can strengthen community bonds.

Alina joined her family and tribal members at the Wilton Rancheria Breast Cancer Awareness Walk/Run in Elk Grove, California. The event brought together community members and local organizations to raise awareness about the impact of breast cancer — particularly within Native communities. “I adore the Breast Cancer Awareness Walk,” she shared. “Each year, the size grows, just like the amount of education and awareness. It’s so important to highlight relevant issues faced in our Native communities, specifically our sacred women.” With informational booths, carnival games, and a community walk, the event served as both an educational resource and a celebration of unity and healing.

Alina also attended a Talking Circle hosted by the Native Sisters Circle Organization, where participants gathered in a sacred, protected space to share openly and support one another. The circle centered around an altar symbolizing peace and protection, providing an environment for deep reflection and connection. “I appreciate the talking circle because it’s always a safe space,” Alina said. “The circle is a judgment-free zone, and I believe that entirely. I trust the space and its intentions. It’s therapeutic to be able to relax and speak on issues being faced.”

Through these experiences, Alina exemplified what it means to lead with empathy and cultural grounding. Whether she’s baking symbolic treats, walking for awareness, or creating safe spaces for healing, she continues to represent the spirit of UNITY’s mission — building community and inspiring hope through shared values and authentic connection.

As the Pacific Regional Representative on the National UNITY Council Executive Committee, Alina advocates for Native youth across California and the broader Pacific region, ensuring their voices and stories are heard. Her dedication to uplifting women, nurturing cultural identity, and fostering togetherness shows that leadership isn’t just about speaking up — it’s about creating spaces where others feel safe enough to do the same.
