This fall, Alina Sanchez (Miwok – Wilton Rancheria), Pacific Regional Representative on the National UNITY Council Executive Committee, showed that leadership doesn’t always happen on a big stage — sometimes it happens through everyday acts of connection, service, and joy. From running a school snack shack to sharing stories with her Native Sisters Circle and representing her student government at a leadership exchange, Alina’s month was filled with meaningful moments that reflected her dedication to community and growth.
Her first event of the month was a hands-on act of school spirit as she helped host the snack shack at her school’s boys’ soccer game. Partnering with her Student Government Senior Representatives, Alina served up snacks and smiles to students, families, and fans cheering on their team. “I love engaging with members of our school community and supporting the team!” she shared. It was a small but powerful reminder of how community service can bring people together — one snack and one conversation at a time.

Alina took part in a more personal and healing space with her Native Sisters Circle in Sacramento, California. The group gathered for a meal, laughter, and heartfelt conversations — a safe space for young Native women to connect and support one another. “This group is so beneficial and healing,” Alina reflected. “I look forward to attending group weekly and having the chance to share a safe space with others.” The gathering underscored the significance of belonging and emotional well-being, particularly for Native youth navigating the complexities of school life and cultural identity.
Alina also represented her school at a Shadow Host Day with Saint Francis High School, an opportunity to collaborate with another student government and exchange ideas about leadership, service, and community engagement. Hosted at Saint Francis High, the day encouraged cross-school partnerships and inspired Alina to keep growing as a young leader. “I had a great time meeting such kind, welcoming women in power,” she said. “It’s always lovely to connect with other students who are passionate about leadership and connecting with our school communities.”
Each event — whether at her school, in her community, or among peers — reflected Alina’s deep commitment to connection. She continually finds ways to build relationships, celebrate her culture, and create positive spaces for others to belong.
As the Pacific Regional Representative on the National UNITY Council Executive Committee, Alina brings this same energy to the larger UNITY network — uplifting Native youth voices and fostering leadership opportunities across the region. Her example reminds us that leadership begins with showing up for your community, listening with heart, and creating spaces where everyone feels seen, supported, and inspired.
