F.I.N.A.L. Youth Council Inauguration

The Phoenix Indian Center held its annual inauguration of newly elected officers of the Future Inspired Native American Leaders (FINAL) Youth Council on August 15, 2019 at Steele Indian School Park in Phoenix, Arizona. In attendance for the inauguration were the following UNITY Youth Councils: Tohono O’odham Nation Youth Council, Young River Peoples Council, Akimel O’odham/Pee-Posh Youth Council, Ak-Chin Indian Community Youth Council. UNITY Western Region Representative Tyloria Antone and UNITY Southern Plains Region Representative Colby WhiteThunder.

Intergenerational Call to Action for Earth Advocates

Continuing the legacy of environmental advocates, the 2019-2020 Circle of Earth Ambassadors included intergenerational teachings to engage UNITY Youth Councils in service projects. Community elders and UNITY alumni participation was made possible through the financial support of a a National Park with an initiative “Connecting with Our Homelands” to foster intergenerational sharing through Hopa Mountain, Inc. Generations of Earth Ambassadors gathered to launch this year’s environmental call to action.

UNITY Drum: How it all began

In 1994 at the National UNITY Conference in Tampa Bay, Florida, Bea Shawanda, Odawa/Pottowottomi from Wikwemikong Manitoulin Island, Ontario and her son Niso presented UNITY with a drum. A great gift from our north country, it was said that this drum is for everyone. All who can and want to sing were invited to have a seat at this drum. “Wherever it may be, the UNITY Drum is considered as an open drum, no matter what tribe or gender. All tribes have their own way and protocols and we have to respect each and everyone,” said Junior Sierra, Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma and a UNITY drum keeper.

Noli Indian School graduates 11 in June ceremony

Eleven Native students are ready to pursue their goals and dreams after completing requirements to graduate from Noli Indian School, which is located on the Soboba Indian Reservation in Southern California. Many of the students representing various tribes proudly attached eagle feathers to their beaded graduation caps as they received their diplomas inside the Soboba’s new casino event center. The ceremony began with prayer and bird singing led by Wayne Nelson of the Inter-tribal Singers.

AIHEC Student President TaNeel Filesteel

UNITY Youth Leader and former UNITY 25 Under 25 Leadership Award recipient TaNeel Filesteel elected the American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC) Student President for 2019-2020. TaNeel is from the Fort Belknap Agency, in Montana and is currently studying Tribal Governance and Administration at Salish Kootenai College in Pablo, Montana.
