Get to know the newest UNITY Peer Guide Cohort and learn more about their passion for advocating for “non-traditional” Native youth leadership. UNITY has recruited this diverse group of youth mentors, to design and facilitate six regional trainings across the nation. These trainings will empower Native youth to speak out about critical aspects of juvenile justice and delinquency prevention efforts within their home communities.

Team-building training at the bottom of the Grand Canyon

“Don’t step on a landmine!,” said Mary Kim Titla, UNITY’s executive director. She was speaking to educators and staff at the Havasupai Elementary School participating in a team-building exercise. The landmine exercise involved an obstacle course ridden with imaginary land mines (plastic cups). Teams of two people, one blindfolded, were instructed to navigate their way through the course without hitting a land mine. The exercise is designed to build communication skills and trust.

Video Contest Winners showcased during Wellness Warrior Summit

To celebrate the third year of UNITY Wellness Warriors, three winning Youth Councils were showcased during the UNITY Wellness Warrior Summit. They also received three complimentary registrations to attend the National Conference through the Kellogg Scholarship. Each of them created a video showcasing what wellness means to them in their communities. The UNITY Wellness Warriors program, in partnership with the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, hosted this day as the culmination and sharing of Wellness Warrior projects and youth council activities.

National UNITY Conference garners more than 2,300 Native youth

Native American youth from urban and rural communities across the nation gathered in July for the annual National UNITY Conference, held at the Gaylord Resort & Conference Center in Orlando, Florida. The 5-day conference, hosted by United National Indian Tribal Youth (UNITY), provided participants with culturally relevant leadership and skill-building training through workshops and keynote presentations. For 43 years, UNITY has offered essential support to Native American and Alaska Native youth, ages 14-24, through various programming opportunities, instilling a foundation for youth leaders and advocates to activate and build upon being positive change agents in their communities.

UNITY partners with ASU Cronkite and ABC 15 for UNITY News!

The 2019 National UNITY Conference kicked off with a one-of-a-kind communications training featuring some of the best multi-media instructors in Arizona. The bootcamp was made possible through a partnership with Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Mass Communication and Journalism. The camp also featured Colton Shone, the morning anchor for KOB Eyewitness News Today in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Prior to working at KOB, Colton was a reporter in Phoenix in both television at CBS 5 News and radio at KTAR-FM.
