Nearly all our ceremonial ways are centered around the use of air, water, pant life, animal life, and the use of fire. For this reason, a member of the 1995 Executive Committee of the National UNITY Council by the name of SleepyEye LaFromboise, Seneca/Dakota, asked one of his grandfathers, the late Warren Skye, Seneca, how UNITY could utilize these elements during the national conference. At the time, “Grandpa Skye” explained that whenever the Nations of the Haudenosaunee people meet to conduct business or have ceremonies they always utilize a fire with prayer. Since many Nations of Native youth come together during the National Conference to better themselves, the concept of the fire was presented.

UNITY Wellness Warriors at NIEA’s Journey to Discovery and Wellness Camp
UNITY’s Wellness Warriors team had the opportunity to be a part of NIEA’s “Journey to Discover and Wellness” summer camp at Riverside Indian School in Oklahoma. This comprehensive summer bridge program supports middle school aged Native young people in creating awareness of opportunities to choose healthy, holistic lifestyles in their educational journeys.

Recruiting for the UNITY Orchestra!
If you’re planning to attend the 2019 National UNITY Conference and you can read music, please consider being a part of the UNITY Orchestra! In addition to instrumental musicians, some singers may be needed as well. Music teacher Michelle McCauley, Washoe/Shoshone/Paiute/Quinault, who will serve as orchestra conductor, will host three workshop sessions on Sunday, July 7 for those wishing to take part. The UNITY Orchestra will then provide entertainment during the Gala banquet on Sunday, July 7.

National UNITY Council Network in Action
As the largest Native youth gathering in the nation quickly approaches, thousands of youth groups and tribal organizations are buzzing with anticipation. Native Youth describe the UNITY Conference as an “life changing experience” that empowers them to action when they return home. As part of the National UNITY Council’s annual membership renewal youth councils submit their Annual Reports outlining how they have impacted their local community through service projects.

UNITY News Co-Anchors selected
Madeline Lamb, Mohave/Muscogee Creek, and Jay Massey-Heyl, White Mountain Apache, have been selected to serve as co-anchors for the UNITY News segments set to be shown during the 2019 National UNITY Conference in Orlando, Florida. Lamb and Massey-Heyl taped the first segment of UNITY News last week at the ABC 15 news studio in Phoenix, Arizona. A total of five segments will be shown at the national conference featuring stories produced by news crews made up of Native youth taking part in the pre-conference UNITY Communications Bootcamp. The training is sponsored by Arizona State University’s Cronkite School of Journalism.

The National Center Partners with UNITY to Create a Business Plan Competition for Youth
MESA, AZ- The National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development (The National Center) is partnering with United National Indian Tribal Youth, Inc. (UNITY) to conduct a business plan competition at the upcoming National UNITY Conference. The Business Plan Competition is open to teams of individuals who attend the 2019 National UNITY Conference and is divided into two divisions: Team Youth High School-Age (14-17) and Team College-Age (18-24). Each team must be comprised of at least two people within the same age division. The winners will be announced during the National UNITY Conference July 4-8, 2019 in Orlando, FL.
