June Opportunities for Native Youth and Families

The Phoenix Indian Center is offering several opportunities throughout June for Native youth, caregivers, families and community members. Programs include parenting support, legal education, cultural activities, youth leadership, career exploration and community wellness.

Parenting in 2 Worlds

Parents and caregivers are invited to join Parenting in 2 Worlds, a 10-week virtual program focused on strengthening parenting skills through culture.

Participants will deepen their understanding of child development, learn how to discuss and prevent risky behaviors, and connect with other caregivers for support. Enrollment and participation also provide opportunities to enter daily raffles and receive incentives.

Classes are held virtually on Wednesday evenings from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Arizona time through July 29, 2026. Registration closes June 10, 2026.

Attorney Chat: Orders of Protection and Victim Support Services

The Phoenix Indian Center is partnering with Defenders of Children to offer a virtual Attorney Chat focused on orders of protection and other victim support services.

Defenders of Children provides family-law services to families and survivors of domestic violence and child abuse throughout Arizona and across Tribal Nations. Participants will learn about legal processes, available protections and resources that may support victims and their families.

The webinar will be held June 11, 2026, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Arizona time.

Family Is Sacred Journaling Workshop

The Family Is Sacred Webinar Series will offer a free interactive journaling workshop led by artist, illustrator and educator Deonoveigh Mitchell.

Participants will learn how to begin and maintain a journaling practice, use writing prompts to guide expression and incorporate culture and visual art into the creative process. The workshop will also explore how journaling can support self-awareness, emotional wellness and healing.

Mitchell is a Diné and Black mother, artist and educator whose work is inspired by her upbringing on the Navajo Nation. Her workshops use storytelling, painting, sculpture, journaling and other art forms to help participants share their own experiences.

The virtual workshop will be held June 11, 2026, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Arizona time.

Apply for the F.I.N.A.L. Youth Council

Indigenous high school students are invited to apply for the 2026–2027 Future Inspired Native American Leaders, or F.I.N.A.L., Youth Council.

Selected members will serve as youth ambassadors for the Phoenix Indian Center’s Youth Development Program. Council members will help plan cultural, educational and community activities, collaborate with Tribal youth, elders and community leaders, and strengthen their leadership and networking skills.

Applications are due June 12, 2026, at 5 p.m. Arizona time. Interviews will take place from June 24 through July 7, with selected members notified on July 17. Youth Council orientation will be held July 28–30, followed by the inauguration on August 1.

Navajo Coming-of-Age Youth Cohort Information Session

Navajo youth and their families are invited to attend a virtual information session about the Phoenix Indian Center’s upcoming Kinaaldá dóó Zhízhch’į́į́d youth cohort.

The program supports Navajo girls and boys as they learn about the Kinaaldá and Zhízhch’į́į́d puberty ceremonies and begin their journeys toward adulthood. Youth will have opportunities to ask questions, build confidence, connect with their culture and receive support from family members, peers and community leaders.

The virtual information session will be held June 16, 2026, from 6 to 7 p.m. Arizona time. Parents and guardians may attend to learn about eligibility, the program schedule and the application process.

Trade and Community College Campus Tours

Indigenous high school students can explore hands-on career opportunities during a campus tour of The Refrigeration School and Gateway Community College.

Participants will learn about career pathways in welding, automotive technology, health sciences and other skilled professions. The tours are designed to show students the many educational and career options available after high school, including programs that do not require attending a four-year university.

The tours will take place June 17, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Refrigeration School and Gateway Community College in Phoenix.

National Eat Your Vegetables Day

June 17 is National Eat Your Vegetables Day, an opportunity for families to encourage healthy eating habits in fun and creative ways.

Families can add colorful vegetables to favorite meals, involve children in cooking or gardening, and experiment with roasting, grilling or air-frying vegetables. The Phoenix Indian Center newsletter also features a veggie pizza recipe that families can prepare together using broccoli, radishes, onions, bell peppers, carrots, celery and other favorite toppings.

Cooking with Culture: Hasan Baidag Season

Community members are invited to learn about O’odham food traditions during a special Cooking with Culture event featuring hasan baidag, or saguaro fruit.

The gathering will include a live cooking demonstration using desert-harvested ingredients, a kid-friendly meal and conversations about the cultural importance of traditional foods.

Cooking with Culture will be held June 18, 2026, from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Phoenix Indian Center, located at 4041 N. Central Avenue, Building B, in Phoenix.

UICAZ Community Coalition Meeting

The Urban Indian Coalition of Arizona will hold its monthly community meeting on June 23, 2026, from 2 to 4 p.m.

UICAZ works to prevent suicide, underage drinking, marijuana misuse and prescription drug misuse by building on the strengths of culture and community. Participants may attend in person at the Phoenix Indian Center or join virtually. Free parking validation is available for in-person attendees.

Phoenix Indian Center Career Opportunities

The Phoenix Indian Center is seeking career-focused and community-minded individuals to join its team.

Current openings include Prevention Specialist, two Language and Culture Specialist positions, and Workforce Development Specialist. Applicants interested in supporting Native youth, families and communities are encouraged to apply.

The Living in 2 Worlds Summer Camp will take place June 29 through July 10, 2026. Virtual children and youth Navajo language classes will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from July 7 through July 30.

A high school youth silversmithing workshop will be held July 8, and applications for Codefy’s Software Development Training and Tech Internship are due July 10. A Two Spirit and Ally Self-Defense Class will be held July 18.

Native American Recognition Day Recap

The Phoenix Indian Center recently partnered with the Arizona Diamondbacks for Native American Recognition Day on June 7, 2026.

As part of the new Cleats for a Cause initiative, local Native artists ranging from elementary school students to elders hand-painted cleats donated by Diamondbacks players and coaches. The finished designs were worn during batting practice and the game against the Washington Nationals before being auctioned to support community programs.

The collaboration celebrated Native artists and stories while raising awareness of the creativity and strength of Native communities. The Arizona Diamondbacks also donated $10,000 to the Phoenix Indian Center.

Free Virtual Job-Readiness Workshops

The Phoenix Indian Center’s Workforce Development Team offers free virtual job-readiness workshops throughout the month.

Participants can receive help with résumés, cover letters, job searches, interview preparation and other employment skills. These workshops are available to community members seeking new career opportunities or additional support during their job search.
