The Missoula Native Youth Council played a key leadership role in the Montana Tribal Language Series, a four-session cultural event held at the University of Montana’s Payne Family Native American Center. With over 120 attendees across the series, the event focused on spiritual wellness through the revitalization and celebration of Indigenous languages.
The series highlighted four vital Tribal languages—Blackfeet, Northern Cheyenne, Bitterroot Salish, and Kootenai—each representing the deep cultural roots of Montana’s Native Nations. The Missoula Native Youth Council helped guide the direction of the event by recommending which languages to feature, ensuring community representation and respect for each Nation’s heritage.
Council members also played a hands-on role in making the series a success by supporting food setup, handling registration, and assisting with event logistics. Their contributions ensured a welcoming and well-organized experience for all participants.
By centering Indigenous youth in the planning and implementation of this series, the event not only promoted language revitalization but also fostered spiritual connection, pride, and cultural continuity. The Missoula Native Youth Council’s involvement exemplifies how young leaders are helping to carry forward the voices of their ancestors while building pathways for future generations.
