Three members of the Native Village of Eyak Tribal Youth Council had the honor of attending the 2023 Elder & Youth Conference hosted by the First Alaskans Institute in Anchorage. This powerful gathering brought together Alaska Native youth and elders from across the state to engage in intergenerational learning, cultural revitalization, and community healing.
The theme of this year’s conference, “Let it be that we heal each other,” guided every session, panel, and activity—encouraging open dialogue, mutual understanding, and a collective path forward for Alaska Native communities. Topics covered included cultural identity, mental health, climate resilience, language preservation, and Indigenous leadership.
For the Tribal Youth Council members, the conference was more than an educational opportunity—it was a deeply emotional and inspiring experience. Engaging with elders, cultural leaders, and fellow youth from diverse regions gave them insight into shared struggles and strengths, as well as practical tools for supporting their own community in Cordova.
Attending the conference supported the youth council’s commitment to mental wellness by highlighting the importance of healing through connection, cultural knowledge, and storytelling. The experience reaffirmed the vital role that young people play in carrying forward the teachings of their ancestors while fostering safe, supportive spaces for mental and emotional well-being.
The three youth members returned home with renewed purpose and a wealth of knowledge to share. They plan to host community gatherings and discussions to bring what they learned back to the Native Village of Eyak—ensuring that the wisdom shared at the Elder & Youth Conference continues to ripple throughout their community.
Through their participation, the Eyak Tribal Youth Council continues to demonstrate leadership rooted in respect, healing, and cultural continuity—bridging generations to build a stronger, healthier future.
