In a powerful demonstration of unity and determination, the North Carolina Native American Youth Organization (NCNAYO) successfully sent a delegation of 10 youth representatives to the 2023 National UNITY Conference in Washington, D.C.—the largest annual gathering of Native American and Alaska Native youth in the country. This milestone was made possible through an ambitious, youth-led fundraising campaign that mobilized families, tribal communities, and supporters across North Carolina.
Understanding the unique impact of attending UNITY, NCNAYO launched its fundraising initiative early in the year. The campaign included raffles, silent auctions featuring cultural items, online crowdfunding, and outreach to sponsors within tribal organizations and local businesses. NCNAYO youth took the lead in organizing these efforts, speaking publicly about their goals and sharing how the experience would help them grow as emerging leaders and cultural ambassadors.
The UNITY Conference offered NCNAYO participants an unparalleled opportunity to network with Indigenous peers nationwide, build leadership skills, and celebrate their cultures on a national platform. Workshops, general assemblies, and cultural exchange sessions gave attendees space to explore issues affecting Native youth, share best practices, and strengthen their identities through peer connection.
More than just a trip, NCNAYO’s participation in UNITY reflected the strength of community-based support systems and the critical role youth play in shaping the future of Indian Country. Their involvement also reinforced the UNITY pillar of Social Wellness, as it promoted positive youth development, cultural belonging, and civic engagement.
This successful campaign and conference attendance serve as a reminder that when communities invest in their youth, they are investing in the future of their nations.
