Pacific Region Advisor Voices: Guidance and Inspiration

SIN04962

Advisors play a pivotal role in shaping the journey of Native youth. In this UNITY Advisor Advice feature, Shonta Chaloux of Pechanga Band of Indians and Carrie Brown of Bishop Tribe reflect on the most valuable lessons, challenges, and joys encountered in their work. Their perspectives offer encouragement, practical wisdom, and authentic motivation for all who mentor young leaders.

Shonta Chaloux – Pechanga Youth Council

For more than 25 years, Shonta Chaloux has served tribal youth, passionately watching them grow from participants to mentors and community leaders. His daily philosophy centers on resilience and self-worth: the past cannot be changed, happiness is found within, kindness costs nothing, and the only true failure is quitting. Shonta’s greatest fulfillment comes from witnessing youth evolve into role models and contributors—both in their families and tribal community.

He consistently reminds his council: life is by design, not by chance, and improving oneself uplifts everyone around you. “Be consistent, be truthful, be present, and always listen,” he says, capturing the heart of true mentorship.

While resource limitations and funding shortages are ongoing challenges, Shonta advocates for teamwork across tribal departments and persistent outreach to leadership. Creative fundraising ideas—like car washes, taco sales, and securing grants—help sustain youth activities.

Shonta’s advice in action:

  • Collaborate widely; pool resources across departments.
  • Advocate persistently for youth program funding.
  • Lead every day by listening first and acting with care.
Carrie Brown – Bishop Tribal Youth Council

Carrie Brown’s approach centers on servant leadership: advisors should be the first to arrive and the last to leave. She believes youth are leaders now, not just future leaders, and their participation in community activities is an act of ownership and pride. Encouraging all youth to step forward, Carrie finds reward not just in their leadership, but in being a steady, supportive presence they can count on.

Carrie is constantly seeking new ways to keep youth engaged, welcoming creativity and collaboration. She leans on proven fundraisers—donations, candy sales, and car washes—to support programming, and she values genuine kindness, transparency, and consistency above all.

Carrie’s practical insights:

  • Stay open to fresh ideas and collaboration.
  • Be someone youth can rely on—fair, transparent, and present.
  • Lead by example with servant leadership and consistency.

UNITY celebrates the wisdom, energy, and compassion of every advisor. Your commitment makes all the difference for your young people and your community. Thank you for sharing your stories and strengthening the future of Native youth programs.
