The New York Indian Council is an Indian Health Service-funded Urban Indian Organization serving Native community members across all five boroughs. Its programs are designed to help American Indian and Alaska Native people living in an urban setting access coordinated healthcare in an environment rooted in cultural respect, understanding and community connection.

The organization addresses a wide range of health needs through health education, disease-prevention programs, vaccination and immunization clinics, behavioral health services and dental referrals. These services help Native community members receive preventive care while also connecting them with resources for their ongoing physical and mental wellness.

New York Indian Council Wellness Case Managers provide individualized assistance to community members navigating the healthcare system. They can help individuals enroll in health insurance, schedule medical appointments and connect with trusted healthcare providers and community resources. This practical support can be especially important in a large healthcare system where finding appropriate and culturally responsive services may feel difficult or overwhelming.

In February 2026, NCUIH CEO Francys Crevier, who is Algonquin, visited the New York Indian Council to learn more about its programs and see how the organization provides culturally grounded healthcare to Native people throughout the city.

The visit highlighted the essential role that Urban Indian Organizations play in connecting national healthcare policy with the everyday experiences and needs of Native people living away from Tribal lands. These organizations help ensure that Native community members are not overlooked when seeking healthcare, behavioral health support and other important services.

The New York Indian Council is one of 41 Indian Health Service-funded Urban Indian Organizations operating nationwide. These organizations help fulfill the federal government’s trust responsibility to provide healthcare to American Indian and Alaska Native people, including the more than 70% of Native people who live in urban areas.

By combining culturally grounded services with personalized healthcare navigation, the New York Indian Council is helping strengthen access, stability and wellness for Native people across New York City.

NCUIH’s Urban Indian Organization Spotlight series shares the work, accomplishments and experiences of organizations serving urban Native communities across the country. Urban Indian Organizations interested in being featured may submit information about their programs, services, recent milestones and high-resolution photographs to communications@ncuih.org.
