Weston Bird: A Rising Leader Empowering Native Youth Across the Great Plains

Weston Bird

Weston Bird, a proud member of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nations, is quickly emerging as a strong voice for Native youth leadership. At just 16 years old, Weston is already making a significant impact as the 2025-2026 Great Plains Regional Representative on the National UNITY Council Executive Committee. Entering his senior year of high school, he is driven by academic excellence, with aspirations to graduate with high honors and earn the title of valedictorian.

Weston’s leadership journey began just a year ago when he joined the MHA Youth Leadership Council. In that short time, he has become a dynamic force within his community—helping to plan and host events such as Mother Corn Day, hand game tournaments, community meals, and local fundraisers. These experiences have helped him cultivate his natural leadership abilities and deepen his commitment to service.

A multi-sport athlete, Weston participates in football, basketball, and jiu-jitsu—activities that have instilled in him a strong sense of discipline, resilience, and teamwork. These traits carry over into his leadership style, where he approaches each opportunity with focus, dedication, and a collaborative spirit.

As a regional representative, Weston is passionate about amplifying youth voices and building connections across tribal communities. His goals include uniting youth councils across the Great Plains, fostering collaboration, and creating more opportunities for Native youth to lead and serve. He is especially focused on expanding the number of active youth councils in the region, believing in the power of grassroots leadership to create meaningful, lasting change.

Grounded in cultural pride, personal discipline, and a deep commitment to service, Weston is a rising leader with a bold vision: a stronger, more unified future for Native youth across the Great Plains and beyond.
